Welcome, Jan.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMohamed is one of a number of young Egyptians who have recently publicly admitted to not adhering to any faith.\u003cbr/\u003eTheir admission has sent shockwaves through Egypt's predominantly religious conservative society.\u003cbr/\u003eSome TV channels had invited them to debate with religious scholars, but most, say Mohamed, ended up ridiculing their beliefs when they were on air.\u003cbr/\u003eMohamed says one show he appeared on in 2013, sought to prove that he had converted to atheism for \"psychological reasons,\" something that has been echoed by the authorities.\u003cbr/\u003eIntent on being able to discuss his beliefs, Mohamed started up \"Black Ducks\" in 2012 as a way to debate his new found ideas.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I launched the 'Black Ducks' programme on YouTube to give the chance to atheists from the Middle East and North Africa to speak out,\" he explains.  \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities have been quick to play down the conversions. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Ministry of Religious Endowments even set-up a task force to investigate.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We formed a team of sociologists and psychiatrists to study the matter. We found out that the conversion to atheism is not always driven by intellectual reasons. But in most cases, the conversion happens for psychological reasons,\" says a senior official at the ministry, Sheikh Ahmed Torki.\u003cbr/\u003e\"A young man would convert to atheism as an act of rebellion against religious malpractices such as the misuse of religion in politics the way the Muslim Brotherhood did.\"\u003cbr/\u003eYoung people say that access to the internet - and new and fresh ideas - and has enabled them to debate freely online.\u003cbr/\u003eMohamed says he \"converted\" to atheism from Islam three years ago, after being exposed to readings that were critical of religions on Facebook. \u003cbr/\u003eThe internet's reach has not gone unnoticed by the Ministry of Religious Endowments.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We noticed growing atheist trends among the youth on the social media. Some youths are expressing atheist ideas that deny the existence of God and question all religions,\" says Torki.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We launched an initiative to highlight rational and religious evidence against atheism, to reach out to the youth and hold dialogues in order to guard them against atheist thoughts.\"\u003cbr/\u003eMohamed uses Google Hangout service that allows him to broadcast the show live on YouTube, where he has reached more than two million people, he says.\u003cbr/\u003eHis guests include converts from both Islam and Christianity. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Most of my guests are already my friends. We talk on the Internet and I knew them through the social media, whether it is Facebook, Twitter or YouTube.\"\u003cbr/\u003eRights groups say they've seen a number of attacks on atheists who have decided to go public. \u003cbr/\u003eAmr Ezzat, a researcher with the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights (EIPR), says a number of cases of \"religious defamation\" have been brought to the courts in recent years.\u003cbr/\u003e\"In some instances, people had attacked atheists who went public in the media. When the victim went to the police station, he was treated as a suspect because of his ideas. So I believe the Egyptian context poses a lot of challenges to atheist and irreligious groups,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eProsecutions under Egypt's blasphemy laws have been a common fixture of Egyptian life during the terms of Presidents Hosni Mubarak and Mohammed Morsi.\u003cbr/\u003eEzzat says the EIPR recorded 36 court cases between 2011 and 2012.\u003cbr/\u003e\"It is very healthy that people who lost faith in religions have come out of the closet despite the harassment and the oppression that we face,\" says Mohamed.\u003cbr/\u003eMohamed still lives with his parents - and is engaged to Hadeer Ayman, who is a deist - someone who accepts that God exists, but does not practice a religion.\u003cbr/\u003eHis family, he says, are not pleased about his decision but have gone along with it. \u003cbr/\u003eHis fiancee says it's a personal matter and it won't stop her from marrying him. \u003cbr/\u003eMohamed is wrapping up the day's show.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I am so happy and I hope you liked today's episode,\" he announces. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I hope you keep following and supporting the show with your comments.
