No heavy textbooks, notebooks or three-ring binders.  At the Ikaros Institute everybody carries an iPad.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis fall, the vocational high school became the first school in Italy to swap traditional methods for digital learning, and gave all its 1,300 students a shiny new tablet with their annual tuition. \u003cbr/\u003eInside, novice hairstylists surf the web for classic cuts. \u003cbr/\u003eFrancesca Micheletti is a second-year hairstyling student at the Ikaros Institute. She admits the change over hasn't all been plain sailing: \"It's been different to use the iPad, because a lot of people didn't know how. Some didn't know how to download stuff, but in the end we got used to it, and it's a lot better than in my first year.\"\u003cbr/\u003eIkaros students pair literature and maths with vocational tracks. After three years, they receive a professional certificate. After five, they graduate with a high school diploma. But it's only because Ikaros is a private school, that it's been able to branch out like this. \u003cbr/\u003eThey financed the project with a 5.8 million Euro ($7.4 million) grant from the Lombardy region, and each student pays a 700 Euro ($900) in annual tuition. \u003cbr/\u003eThe first, most important lesson the pupils have to learn is that the tablets provide much more than social networking or news feeds.\u003cbr/\u003eAlessandra Carenzio from the Research Centre for Media Information and Education Technology (CREMIT), at Milan's Catholic University of the Sacred Heart says: \u003cbr/\u003e\"It's well known because of research and not just common sense, that placing a tablet on a each student's desk isn't enough if the teaching methods don't change. While Europe's Digital Agenda aims to bring more technology into every classroom by 2020, Italy's education technology experts are looking to see if the Ikaros model can live up to its promises. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Research Centre for Media Information and Technology Education (CREMIT), is now filming entire school days at the Ikarnos Insititute, and will continue to do so for the next three years.  \u003cbr/\u003eThey hope to collect enough data to determine whether or not tablets can be used effectively as a learning tool, and if the model can be replicated.\u003cbr/\u003eClients are
