Close up of slow loris getting nutritional drops
Conservationists in the Indonesian city of Bogor are working to improve the life of a little-known nocturnal primate - the slow loris.
Critically-endangered, its huge eyes and teddy bear-like appearance means it's one the most heavily-traded primates in Indonesia.
The slow loris can be found in South and Southeast Asia.
In Indonesia it is endemic to three main islands - Sumatra, Java and Kalimantan.
Due to loss of habitat and illegal trade these lovable creatures are listed as critically endangered in the world, but an animal welfare organisation in the city of Bogor is working to re-establish healthy population numbers of these nocturnal primates.
The International Animal Rescue (IAR) was set up as a non-profit rehabilitation centre for slow lorises in 2008. It is believed to be the first centre of its kind in the world.
It takes in slow lorises that are rescued from their human owners as well as those that are handed in voluntarily.
It currently has 46 full-time employees consisting of 4 medical teams, 11 nurses and a number of field workers.
The animals here have an array of different physical and mental injuries.
The slow loris has a toxic bite that can cause necrosis of the flesh in humans. As a result, many have their teeth taken out during captivity. This makes it impossible for them to catch their prey in the wild.
Others have endured injuries from being in chains.
This little chap has had his paw amputated due to a severe infection.
Veterinarian, Wendy Prameswari has worked at the facility for the last 2 years. She says rehabilitation can last for years before the team are able to make a decision on whether a slow loris can be released to the wild:
"We currently treat 84 slow lorises. Out of this group, we can probably release only 15 slow lorises from Java and Sumatra back into the wild because many of them do not have teeth any longer, which is a crucial factor determining whether they can be released. What we are also doing here is improving the welfare of those slow lorises that won't make it into our release programme."
Since 2010, the centre has released 17 slow lorises to the nearby Gunung Halimun Salak National Park. Seven of them were released this year.
The staff install a radio collar unit on each slow loris before releasing it.
IAR release coordinator, Robithotul Huda says: "The radio collar that we are using has a 3-kilometre (2 mile) radius for its signal. This is the way it works. The radio collar will transmit a signal that the receiver will then pick up. We can also use the equipment to measure the distance between the slow loris and our team."
After their release, a monitoring team keeps track of the animals in the forest on a daily basis.
They keep records of physical condition, behaviour, food supply and living conditions.
And there's good news:
Huda says: "There is a positive indication that two of the released slow lorises, Marta and Wilis, have been recorded as mating with wild slow lorises in the forest. Our latest information suggests that one of the slow lorises has shown a big belly, and we need to determine if it is in fact pregnant."
Hilda Teti from the Indonesian Institute of Sciences has been researching this nocturnal primate for 15 years. She says there are fewer than 500 left in the wild across Indonesia - half of their number in the 1990s.
Teti says: "In the last 3 decades, we have a seen a decrease of slow loris population in the wild as a result of hunting, habitat degradation, natural disaster and the expansion of human settlement into forests."
The slow lorises are caught by hunters and sold as human pets. They are also killed for traditional medicines.
Despite being protected since 1990 by Indonesia's conservation laws, slow lorises are still being sold out in the open in some animal markets in the capital. They are one of the most heavily-traded primates in Indonesia. Prices for them range from between USD $20 and $100.
The IAR team are hoping to turn this trend around by launching a campaign to increase people's awareness of the protected status of
