Tilt down from leaf-like structure of a stool to its seat
The Filipino design alliance 'Movement 8' are celebrating their tenth anniversary with a retrospective exhibition in Manila.
The group of designers have become internationally renown for their use of traditional craftsmanship and commitment to home grown materials such as bamboo and wicker.
When eight Filipino designers got together in 1999 the furniture produced from the Philippines was relatively unknown on the international circuit.
The group called themselves Movement 8 and started to represent the Philippines in trade fairs and international expos.
"There were eight members in the beginning and we went everywhere from New York to Paris to Shanghai, showing the best of what the Philippines has to offer. Those were wonderful times, because the whole world woke up to the fact that there was a real Filipino design scene. Because the Philippines was always known as a producer for foreign brands without its own original design, and Movement 8 changed everyone's perception," says Kenneth Cobonpue, one of the movement's members.
What followed was an influx of buyers from around the world and not just from the run-of-the-mill furniture shops.
Designer Budji Layug's work for example is carried by Bloomingdale's and Cobonpue counts Brad Pitt as one of his customers.
"The moment people knew that there was really original design, that was very modern and global, people started to come in to the Philippines," says Cobonpue.
On their tenth anniversary, they are back home in the Philippines for a retrospective exhibition.
The designs reflect the philosophy that has pushed this group's members to the A-list of designers in the world.
An effort to use local materials sourced in their native country seems to run in the collective consciousness of the group.
Rattan for example is still abundant in the countryside and is still widely used in everyday furniture such as tables and chairs by common people.
But what the Movement 8's designers have done is raise the design level to an art form.
Take for example Kenneth Cobonpue's transformation of doodles into what he now calls the Noodle collection.
His obsession with making the lowly rattan into a fashionable item, means he has worked to transform it into colourful and vibrant designs.
"In a way they are actually very common materials, because the rattan has been around with us for a long, long time, but what I wanted to do was to make rattan chic again and I think the rattan has fallen into disrepute because there were so many cheap imports coming from China and from Indonesia, and people used to think it is discarded furniture you throw away after a couple of years.
