Now even my elder sons are learning computers. In today's world jobs are available only if you know about computers...without computers, there are not many jobs. US-based Internet firm, comScore Networks,the research showed the total online population, aged 15 and over, grew by more than 7 percent to reach 18.02 million in June, up from 16.71 million three months ago.   \u003cbr/\u003eBut the figures don't take into account people under the age of 15.\u003cbr/\u003eThe survey also reportedly excluded people using public computers; frequenting cyber cafes, or accessing the internet from mobile phones or PDAs. \u003cbr/\u003eIt means thousands of cyber-literate children, many of whom have discovered the joys of technology via street corner projects, weren't taken into account.\u003cbr/\u003eOne such street-corner project is in New Delhi.\u003cbr/\u003eA project to allow underprivileged children to teach themselves how to use a computer without adult instruction has been in operation in many low-income neighbourhoods in New Delhi since 1999.\u003cbr/\u003eStarted on an experimental basis by the national institute of Information technology, the project began by setting up a computer in an open space in a residential area and allowing children to have free access to it.\u003cbr/\u003eThe project, nicknamed \"Hole in the Wall\", encourages children to learn by exploring, asking their peers questions, and by developing problem solving skills and creative thinking. \u003cbr/\u003eManas Chakravarty, who runs the scheme, says it teaches children to learn for themselves, rather than look to adults for solutions. \u003cbr/\u003eCurious children learn to operate the computer by a process of trial and error. \u003cbr/\u003eFirst they tend to open applications like painting and games.\u003cbr/\u003eBut soon they learn to browse the internet on their own, and learn some English words and simple terms like monitor, keyboard, memory, etc. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd of course, they find their way to children's websites, watch cartoons, play games and read about entertainment.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe computers are available at all times, for local children, whether they attend school on a regular basis or not. \u003cbr/\u003eThe scheme also empowers disenfranchised groups like girls, or children from poorer families, who are less likely to be sent to school. \u003cbr/\u003eNow these children can begin to teach themselves. \u003cbr/\u003e13 year old Rubina was one of the first girls from her neighbourhood who tried her hand at the computer that stood invitingly close to the street where she lives.\u003cbr/\u003eFascinated by how the machine responded to the touch of the keys , she was hooked, and brought many of her friends and neighbours to share the experience. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter 6 years of playing games and searching the internet for information useful for her studies at school, Rubina has managed to persuade her reluctant parents to invest their meagre savings in a second-hand computer .\u003cbr/\u003eKeeping the machine functional is not easy, thanks to frequent power cuts and rarely working phone connections in Rubina's lower middle-class neighbourhood . \u003cbr/\u003eBut she is proud of her computer skills and has impressed her teachers with her expertise. \u003cbr/\u003eRubina's mother, Nafisa Begum, says she wants her children to be computer literate to secure a successful future. \u003cbr/\u003eIndia has a booming IT sector, and a recent survey of 62 countries by Certiport, which provides training and certification in tech skills for schools, businesses and the public, found that in India 75% of the population are technologically illiterate. \u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers at the 'hole in the Wall' project hope that by increasing the access to computers for children from lower income families that  percentage will continue to rise and cement
