popular in the ancient Roman city.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Lupanare, which derives its name from the Latin word lupa or prostitute, is now open again to the public after being restored over the past year.\u003cbr/\u003ePompeii was destroyed in A.D. 79 by a huge eruption of Mount Vesuvius, that killed thousands of people, and buried the city in 6 metres (20 feet) of volcanic ash.\u003cbr/\u003eThe eruption did, however, preserve Pompeii for 1,600 years, providing precious information on what life was like in the ancient world.\u003cbr/\u003eAmong the buildings was the two-story brothel with 10 rooms, five on each floor, and a latrine. \u003cbr/\u003eThe restoration project wasn't cheap ... it cost US$253,000 (US dollars) to restore Pompeii's famous brothel to its former glory.\u003cbr/\u003eEach tiny room on the ground floor bears a fresco of a different sex scenes painted over its door. \u003cbr/\u003eThe upper floor was for higher-ranking clients. \u003cbr/\u003eThe stone beds were covered with mattresses and each room has names engraved in its walls, possibly those of the prostitutes and their clients.\u003cbr/\u003eThe brothel, once centrally located near the city's forum and the market,  is open to the public as part of the regular tour of the ruins of Pompeii, east of Naples.\u003cbr/\u003ePietro Giovanni Guzzo, Archaeological Superintendent of Pompeii says that the building proves that prostitution has been common place in human society since ancient times. \u003cbr/\u003eGuzzo says this is the only brothel of the ancient world which has survived until modern times. \u003cbr/\u003eThe building was unearthed in 1862 and has undergone several restorations since, most recently in 1949. \u003cbr/\u003eThe latest restoration focused on fixing leaks in the building and restoring the frescoes, which had turned yellow and had faded in parts. \u003cbr/\u003eRosario Paone, is one of the architects who worked on the project. \u003cbr/\u003ePaone says that the restoration in the 1950s was of very poor quality. \u003cbr/\u003eLiberal sexual habits flourished in Pompeii, and considerable evidence testifies that the city's wealthy merchants and visiting sailors had a taste for eroticism.\u003cbr/\u003eToday's tourists seemed amused to learn of the Romans' illicit secrets. \u003cbr/\u003eThe prostitutes were slaves and were usually of Greek or other foreign origin. \u003cbr/\u003eThey commanded prices up to eight times the cost of a portion of wine, with revenues going to their owner or the manager of the
