Israeli military lorry taking away equipment from outpost\u003cbr/\u003eAn inquiry into the establishment of unauthorised West Bank settlement outposts has found widespread complicity of successive Israeli governments and recommended that prosecutors consider criminal investigations against some of those involved.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Israeli government-sponsored study was conducted by former state prosecutor Talia Sasson, who presented her findings at a news conference in Jerusalem on Wednesday.\u003cbr/\u003eSasson said \"drastic steps\" were needed to remedy the situation and safeguard Israel''s democracy. \"Those outposts that are established on private property are totally illegal and must be evacuated,\" Sasson said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe study described the secret cooperation of various ministries and official institutions in channelling money to the outposts, which settlers began setting up more than a decade ago to break up the contiguity of Palestinian areas and prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state. \u003cbr/\u003eFor example, Sasson said that the Housing Ministry supplied those setting up outposts with more than 400 mobile homes.\u003cbr/\u003eIsraeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has repeatedly promised the United States that he would dismantle the more than 100 outposts - one of Israel''s first obligations under the internationally backed \"road map\" peace plan. However, since accepting the road map in 2003, Israel has only removed a few outposts, citing legal difficulties.\u003cbr/\u003eIt wasn''t immediately clear to what extent Sharon - once the leading settler patron - was being held responsible for the establishment and\u003cbr/\u003eexpansion of the outposts.\u003cbr/\u003eAs foreign minister in 1998, Sharon had urged settlers to seize West Bank hilltops and establish outposts.
