Most people who buy the Sohrab are people like milkmen, fruit vendors. They buy it mostly because it doesn't give them any problems. Mid shot of man cycling away from the shop
A campaign is underway in Pakistan to get people to give up their cars and scooters and start pedalling.
The Critical Mass bicycle club in Lahore says the city's polluted and crowded streets are becoming no-go areas for cyclists and their rights to travel and live in a cleaner environment are being violated.
Each day cycles, scooters and cars jostle for space on these hot and dusty roads that line Lahore.
Bicycling is still the most favoured method of transport for Pakistan's working classes, although on some roads it might not seem that way.
Here in Lahore, they provide a cheap reliable alternative to the city's dilapidated bus services and their unreliable timetables.
But the city has made no concessions to the cyclists, or other types of travel.
There are no subways, underground, or metro facilities in any of the cities.
The workforce instead relies on vehicles and many of them emit noxious fumes
While many Pakistani cars and rickshaws run on compressed natural gas, or CNG, many older models and larger vehicles do not and that exacerbates the city's air pollution.
Critical Mass, a group naming itself after a global pedal power movement has launched in Lahore and is attracting an enthusiastic following.
Each Sunday, as the sun goes down, temperatures cool and the traffic thins out, scores of cyclists gather to tour the city on two wheels.
It's founder Rafay Alam, a lawyer specialising in environmental regulation and policy is the founder of the group.
The purpose of the group is to send out a message to Lahore's urban planners that they need to provide an alternative way to get around.
Alam insists the group has a message which makes crucial environmental and financial sense.
He says petroleum accounts for over half of Pakistan's import bill and 55 per cent of its petroleum imports go to service cars and the transport industry.
Alam's argues reducing the dependence on cars makes also helps the economy because it cuts the import bill.
Unlike most of Pakistan's sports clubs, a significant number of members are women who clearly enjoy the security that cycling in a big group offers.
Concern has been replaced with confidence as women young and old, ignore rude comments from drivers and take their bicycles out onto the open road.
Zeenath Khalid has been a member of Critical Mass since it started up here.
She says she only feels comfortable cycling with others because as a single woman she attracts unwanted attention, such as pushing and unpleasant remarks.
People around the city often stare in puzzlement.
The sight of a group of apparently well-to-do people with no clear need to cycle is clearly a novelty for some, as is the sight of women cycling at all.
While women can and do drive cars in Pakistan, it's still a very conservative country and virtually none are seen riding motorbikes or bicycles.
In the past they've always been sitting side-saddle behind a man doing the pedalling .
Nila Gumbad here is the centre of Lahore's bicycle trade.
All styles of bicycle can be found from tricycles to mountain bikes.
It employs many men who carry out repairs.
They can be spotted around the market fixing chains and tyres, spokes and frames, daily casualties of Lahore's notoriously pot-holed roads.
These men learn their trade as young boys and work with the dexterity gained from decades of practice.
Pakistan's most popular brand of bicycle is the Sohrab and they can be found at every store in Nila Gumbad market.
When Pakistan was founded in 1947, there no bicycle factories and everyone had to buy imported brands.
Tariq Memoud works at one of Nila Gumbad's numerous bicycle stores.
He says that the classic Sohrab is still very popular, particularly with those who use them for heavy duty work such as fruit and vegetable vendors, or milk men.
Chinese bicycles, he says are bought because there are seen as being more stylish and are mostly used by school children, or office workers who don't have to transport heavy loads.
Critical Mass isn't concerned about brand, but if recreational cycling takes off in Pakistan, it could provide a big boost to industry and the environment.
wacky

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read
