It sort of looks like what you'd expect a dry lake bed to look like. Now, we do not know what kind of geological material we have landed on. Don't have a clue. I don't know what kind of rocks they are. We haven't seen any pan-cam images yet, so we got no colour. We haven't seen any mini-test yet, so we have no infrared. That's going to come in the days ahead. So, I don't know if these are sedimentary rocks, or if they are lava that's been deposited over it. But, if you asked me ahead of time, \"what's a dry lake bed on Mars going to look like?\" I would have said something a lot like this.\"\u003cbr/\u003e12. success of their 387 pound spacecraft.\u003cbr/\u003eIn what appears to be a technically flawless landing on the Martian surface, \"Spirit\" has apparently set down in the \"scientific\" sweet spot of Gusev crater.\u003cbr/\u003eWithin hours it began sending back photos of the Red Planet. \u003cbr/\u003eAmong the first was a tiny black and white image showing a sundial on the rover.  \u003cbr/\u003eAnother showed the Martian horizon and portions of the lander.\u003cbr/\u003eThe spacecraft landed upright on Saturday night, which made it easy for the four-petaled lander that contains the rover to unfold, allowing it to take photographs.\u003cbr/\u003eThe photographs, zipped to Earth across 170.5 (m) million kilometres (106 (m) million miles) of space, showed a flat landscape peppered with rocks.\u003cbr/\u003eSpirit is one of two-identical six-wheeled robots expected to roam the planet for 90 days, analysing Martian rocks and soil for clues that could reveal
