Wide of street in township\u003cbr/\u003eTeachers and students are meeting in virtual classrooms in South Africa in a joint venture between the government and electronics company Motorola.\u003cbr/\u003eUsing wireless broadband technology, students and teachers in five schools across the country and \"talk\" to each other using virtual whiteboards, microphones and the World Wide Web.\u003cbr/\u003eIn South African schools, one or two teachers are typically responsible for 50 to 100 students. \u003cbr/\u003eThis new technology allows schools to share teachers and resources so more students have access to more material.\u003cbr/\u003eUPSOUND (English) Ron Beyers \"The sulphur is a yellow powder...\"\u003cbr/\u003eAt St Albans college in Pretoria, teacher Ron Beyers is conducting a science experiment.\u003cbr/\u003eBut his classroom extends far beyond these four walls.\u003cbr/\u003eTwenty kilometres away in the Mamelodi Township, pupils at Gatang High School are linking up to the lesson \"live\" with the help of simple technology.\u003cbr/\u003eUsing two standard Microsoft PCs, two webcams, two headsets, a few cheap speakers and two SMARTBOARDS - interactive whiteboards, these two schools have revolutionised the African classroom forever.\u003cbr/\u003eNATSUP: Experiment\u003cbr/\u003eThis interactive schooling is the brainchild of Ron Beyers, who came up with the idea five years ago in Morocco after observing first hand how a lack of educational resources disadvantaged segments of the population.\u003cbr/\u003eAs a result, the Ulwazi E-Learning initiative was formed, a joint venture between Motorola, South Africa's Department of Education and Omega Digital Technologies who designed the interactive whiteboard.\u003cbr/\u003eUPSOUND: (English) \"Class is that correct? Thumbs up or thumbs down? (laughter) Ah, down, ha ha ha.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe project is being piloted in five schools in the poor townships around Pretoria.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are all connected via Motorola's canopy wireless broadband network.\u003cbr/\u003eReal time video and audio feeds are sent to the township schools from an educators classroom 20 kilometres away.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen a student has a question they go the the front of the class and speak into a microphone and write on their interactive SMART Board.\u003cbr/\u003eThe class can see the teacher on a video window that is projected onto the SMARTBOARD.\u003cbr/\u003eThe teacher can see the class the same way.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"The educational paradigm that is applied in a virtual classroom is not necessarily a hundred per cent the same as in a real classroom.
