increasing pressure from climate change and an increase in the population.
South Africa''s coast is a rich marine habitat along its 2,500 kilometres (1,553.4 miles) of coastline.
The Castle Rick Marine Protected Area is located in False Bay off the Cape Peninsula.
The area has 46 known species of fish and 33 species of invertebrates.
A perfect spot for amateur divers to get up close with marine life.
Now that desire to go scuba diving is being utilised for science.
Recreational divers are volunteering to take part in scientific monitoring expeditions, replacing the need for expensive salaried researchers.
Albrecht Goetz is a researcher with the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON), which is concerned with Climate Change and resource exploitation.
Goetz''s interest in Marine Research began after diving in the Caribbean over 15 years ago.
He came to South Africa 10 years ago with an interest in conservation.
Two main goals of the project are:
To check the levels of exploitation and management of resources, and to look at what climate change is doing to the coastal environment.
Many research methods are used to monitor marine life, from methods as technical as remote underwater cameras to traditional fish traps.
This particular project looks at recreational diving as a source of data collection, using volunteers to collect data around the South African coast.
To date, 250 divers have registered interest in the programme.
Of these, 73 divers have trained in 6 two-day training courses since April.
A basic 2-day course introduces volunteers to all the marine animals, the invertebrates, and fish, as well as quantitative skills.
Scientific monitoring is essential, says Goetz, to keep track of any changes to fisheries stocks but more importantly ecosystems that impact those stocks.
Proper management of Marine Protected areas can contribute to the rehabilitation of fisheries stocks.
The majority of the volunteers are recreational divers, found by the researchers through dive clubs.
A few incentives such as free tank filling are offered by dive clubs who support of the project.
The Castle Rock Marine Protected area, on the False Bay side of the Cape Peninsula was chosen for the project because it is a fairly controlled environment where the fish community is stable.
This provides ideal conditions to concentrate on the volunteers and their data variability.
Eventually the project will be rolled out around the entire Cape Peninsula, to the Atlantic side and other marine protected areas as well as exploited areas in the Table Mountain National Park.
Long term, the researchers hope to roll out the project nationwide.
The project currently has funding for 3 years, and is now in its 2nd year.
Sponsors include the World Wildlife Fund and the Table Mountain Fund, with technical support from Marine and Coastal
