Pan from audience to dancers celebrating in the end of the show \u003cbr/\u003eA social project in Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro is helping talented youths from the shanty towns (or so-called 'favelas') to find a way out of the ghetto through dance.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the help of Brazil's most famous choreographer, Angel Vianna, they are turning away from violence and crime and hope to become professional dancers. \u003cbr/\u003eRio is surrounded by shanty towns - 681 in total - and according to a survey by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics, one in every four Brazilians lives in a shanty town. \u003cbr/\u003eLife for children that grow up in the shanty towns is blighted by poverty, their horizons limited by lack of opportunity.\u003cbr/\u003eMany are tempted into a life of crime, seduced by the power and wealth of the drug traffickers operating in their communities.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is a hard cycle to break, but that is what several non-governmental organisations operating in the ghetto are trying to do.\u003cbr/\u003eNow an eight month project is reaching fruition.\u003cbr/\u003e35 lucky teenagers have been chosen out of 100 hopefuls to take contemporary dance classes at a famous dance school.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of them is 18 year old Kiko Alves, who comes from the shanty town of Vigario Geral.\u003cbr/\u003eHe was discovered at the age of 11 by an NGO, and now teaches theatre and dance to kids in his neighbourhood. \u003cbr/\u003eThe youths are putting on a big show \u003cbr/\u003eAt last the big day arrived and the youths were able to show their knowledge in one of the most famous theatres in the up market south zone of Rio, the Sergio Porto Theatre. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the dressing room, the atmosphere was of expectation. In the audience, friends and relatives of the youths shared the expectation. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 50 minutes, the 35 dancers showed why they were chosen to participate in the project. The contemporary dance show was a mix between rap and funk dance - two very popular rhythms in the shanty towns - and Brazilian rhythms, like samba. \u003cbr/\u003eFor the creator of the social project, Angel Vianna, there are many talents inside the shanty towns in Brazil that need to be discovered. \u003cbr/\u003eAccording to the IBGE (the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), there are a total of 16 thousand 433 shanty towns and slums in Brazil. From 1999 to 2001, the number of residences inside the shanty towns went up from 921 thousand to 2 (M) million 36 thousand, an increase of
