Wide of exhibition\u003cbr/\u003eAn exhibition by one of Berlin's favourite artists has opened in the German capital.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Hodicke exhibition includes paintings and sculptures from the last five decades of his works.\u003cbr/\u003eFrom portraits and city motive paintings to installations and sculptures - K.H Hodicke has captured Berlin in its very essence for over half a century.\u003cbr/\u003eHis paintings range from famous Berlin landmarks such as the Brandenburg gate and the iconic TV tower to street scenes at the Potsdamer Platz and portraits of daily life for Berliners.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd for the first time in twenty years, a major exhibition showing his Berlin inspired works has opened at the Berlinische Galerie.\u003cbr/\u003eKarl Horst Hodicke was born in Nuremberg in 1938.\u003cbr/\u003eAfter a few years in Vienna, where his family escaped to as Germany was engulfed in the final stages of the Second World War, he settled in Berlin in 1957.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd the history of Berlin is reflected in many of his paintings.\u003cbr/\u003eSome, such as his dark \"Ministry of war,\" shows buildings and sites associated with the National Socialists regime under Hitler.\u003cbr/\u003eOthers deal with Berlin as a divided city, cut in the middle by the Berlin wall, which separated the West from the East.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of the paintings from his later period show the jubilation and celebration when the wall fell, such as people dancing on top of the Brandenburg Gate.\u003cbr/\u003eHodicke himself says that the inspiration he has drawn from Berlin would be the same if he lived and worked in New York or any other larger city.\u003cbr/\u003eBut he does also say that Berlin is special, or even strange. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I would say that if you are searching around the world for a peculiar place, then you will eventually end up in Berlin,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe exhibition takes up several rooms in the gallery, including the imposing main hall where Hodicke's large-scale paintings are shown.\u003cbr/\u003eBut out of the near hundred artworks shown, Hodicke himself finds it hard, even impossible, to point at one as his favourite painting.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think you can still see what I was trying to achieve when I made each and every paintings. So, I can't say that I have a favourite painting here. That is impossible,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe curator of the exhibition, Heinz Stahlhut, says that it is the diversity of Hodicke will impress and surprise visitors to the exhibition.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think people who come here without any previous knowledge will be surprised by the sheer diversity of the artworks shown. Each room of the exhibition is like a new chapter with new types of art and new unexpected turns,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eHodicke was one of the driving forces behind the booming Berlin art scene.\u003cbr/\u003eIn 1964 he founded his first gallery in West Berlin, called Gro�g�rschen 35, after the address it was located.\u003cbr/\u003eLater he helped emerging young artists, becoming a father figure for young Berlin artists.\u003cbr/\u003eSome of his protegees went on to become famous artists in their own right.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now, as he is about to celebrate his seventy-fifth birthday on February 21, he says he is largely disconnected from the contemporary art scene.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I don't really leave the house very much anymore.
