Mid of Canutzen with tools\u003cbr/\u003eBirds of prey such as hawks and falcons are being used to keep military runways clear of flocks of birds.\u003cbr/\u003eIt''s an especially important job at the Manas Transit Centre,  a U.S. military transportation hub in the Central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan.\u003cbr/\u003eAnother flight of U.S troops arrives at Manas Transit Centre. They are returning from Afghanistan en route home to the USA.\u003cbr/\u003eMassive C-17s aeroplanes full of troops and KC-130s also take off for missions across Afghanistan on a regular basis, passing through Manas.\u003cbr/\u003eThe transit centre opened in December 2001 following the U.S. led invasion of Afghanistan, and is the major transportation hub for coalition forces throughout the region.\u003cbr/\u003eTroops and supplies regularly transit through the centre.\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the greatest dangers to these multi-million dollar aircraft is posed by bird strikes.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the past year alone, U.S. military aircraft have had run-ins with dozens of birds, causing hundreds of thousands of US dollars in damage to coalition aircrafts.\u003cbr/\u003eStephen Ferrell and his hawk Jet work hard patrolling the skies keeping pigeons and flocks of seagulls away from the planes and runways.\u003cbr/\u003eFerrell and Jet make their way out to the runway where the hawk is let free to chase after a flock birds, seizing upon its prey with its razor sharp claws. \u003cbr/\u003eFerrell explains how Jet is used to keep the runways safe.\u003cbr/\u003e\"So, we can drive around with Jet, like I said the same way we can fly the falcons, I can go out on the flight line, I can carry him with me and if there is a large flock of birds on the airfield or even a single bird.
