Huang is not only being trained in the sport of golf, but in the game of life.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 70 children from as young as three years old attend golfing classes. Most are from affluent Chinese families, where childhood for them is not simply child's play, but a crucial stage to acquire skills for later success.\u003cbr/\u003eAs children learn to read and write, they are already learning networking skills and the basics of closing business deals - in the case of young Francis Huang, learning the correct grip of a club and the patience required to practise a swing over 20 times.\u003cbr/\u003eAt 326 US dollars for the most basic course, such skills do not come cheap considering the average Chinese person's annual income was around 1,915 US dollars in 2007.\u003cbr/\u003eOften it's only the elite in China who can afford to give their children this start in life, and often these successful parents are very ambitious for their offspring.\u003cbr/\u003e\"I think this would be helpful for his future, for example his career or whatever he does when he grows up. Because today many people like to talk about business while playing golf\", said Francis' mother, Shirley Yu.\u003cbr/\u003eAt six years old, Chen Yiji may be a little too young for salsa moves, but her parents think the Latin dance will give her a leg up on the corporate ladder.\u003cbr/\u003eActivities, such as ballroom dancing and golf lessons, are increasingly part of the lifestyle training more affluent Chinese parents invest in for their little 'emporers', the lone off-spring of the one child policy. \u003cbr/\u003eRecent surveys show that Mainland Chinese parents spend an average of 20 percent of their income on their children each month.\u003cbr/\u003eWith reportedly 2.6 out of Shanghai's 17 (m) million people rich enough to own a house and a vehicle in 2003, this translates into a large amount of money dedicated just for enriching the city's young.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo years after taking up her first salsa lesson, Chen Yiji now often leads her class of about a dozen children at the Shanghai New Century Kids Latin school.\u003cbr/\u003eBut her growing confidence is more than worth the amount her parents have spent on her dance training.\u003cbr/\u003e\"For children these days, studying is just one aspect but the most important thing is confidence. So I hope academic or artistic classes can boost her confidence. This is what modern day parents need to do - to combine the best of East and West,\" said Chen's mother, Yang Jun.\u003cbr/\u003eIn China's most modern and cosmopolitan city, Western culture is still viewed as somewhat superior. There, putting children on the fast-track more often than not means exposing them to imported practices. But Chinese values and heritage are also making a big return among the affluent.\u003cbr/\u003eTo parry the widespread adoption of Western habits, some parents are feeling an urgency to instil in their children Eastern traditions. Meng Mu Tang Private School is just one of several private Confucius-styled schools blooming all over the mainland that cater to them.\u003cbr/\u003eFor more than 286 US dollars per month, children as young as three undergo a rigorous curriculum that includes training in ancient Chinese art forms like Kun Opera.\u003cbr/\u003eTo absorb traditional values like respect for elders and hard work, students have to memorise and recite ancient Confucian texts everyday.\u003cbr/\u003eSchools in upscale areas of Shanghai are also encouraging their students to adopt more traditional games. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Every parent is concerned about their kids' education.
