Military surrounding the bus\u003cbr/\u003eA roadside bomb tore through a civilian bus in northern Sri Lanka on Saturday, killing eight people and wounding 25, the army said, blaming Tamil Tiger rebels for the attack.\u003cbr/\u003eThe blast occurred near Vavuniya, the last government-held garrison town before rebel-controlled territory in the north, said a senior officer at the defence ministry's information centre.\u003cbr/\u003eThey also said that seven of the dead were civilians and one was a soldier going home on leave.\u003cbr/\u003eThe officer blamed the Liberation Tiger of Tamil Eelam (Tamil Tigers) for the attack but the rebels denied any involvement, calling the bombing a plot to discredit them.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to local police the bomb was hidden in a tree and went off as the bus drove past, they did not know how it had been detonated.\u003cbr/\u003ePolice said seven of the wounded passengers were soldiers, also going on leave.\u003cbr/\u003eKillings in which both sides blame the other, or on militia allegedly allied with the military, have increased in recent months.\u003cbr/\u003eThe attack was the second on a civilian bus in a week, after a bomb on a bus killed 16 people in the eastern town of Ampara on Monday.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bomb exploded as the bus stopped at a checkpoint near Ampara, about 220 kilometres (130 miles) east of Colombo, and passengers started to get off to allow troops to search the vehicle.    \u003cbr/\u003eEyewitnesses said that inside, the wreckage was littered with tattered books, clothes and bags, all covered in blood and bits of flesh.\u003cbr/\u003eOn Friday, the human rights watchdog group Amnesty International said both the military and the rebels were deliberately targeting civilians and urged the country to let in international rights monitors.\u003cbr/\u003eTamil rebels have fought the government since 1983 to create an independent homeland for the country's 3.1 million (m) Tamil minority after decades of discrimination.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Norwegian-brokered cease-fire signed in 2002 that ended more than two decades of fighting remains intact in name only after violence resumed in late
