Presser\u003cbr/\u003eThe United States did not want 2004 to be a \"lost year\" in international trade talks, a top US trade official said on Monday after discussing obstacles to the negotiations with Indian leaders, in the Indian capital Delhi.\u003cbr/\u003eUS Trade Representative Robert Zoellick said he was trying to persuade countries to push for a treaty aimed at boosting international trade and invigorating the global economy by lowering import tariffs and other barriers to free trade.\u003cbr/\u003eZoellick was speaking to reporters after meeting India''s Commerce Minister Arun Jaitley and other officials.\u003cbr/\u003eZoellick held talks in Japan, China, Singapore and Pakistan before arriving in New Delhi on Sunday night.\u003cbr/\u003eThe end of 2004 is the deadline for a World Trade Organisation treaty, which was set when World Trade Organisation nations launched their current round of trade talks in Doha, Qatar in 2001.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever the talks have fallen behind schedule since discussions collapsed last September in Cancun, Mexico over farm subsidies and investment rules.\u003cbr/\u003eDeveloping nations, led by India and Brazil, have been pressing rich countries to stop giving billions of dollars in subsidies to their farmers, while the United States and the European Union want developing countries to cut tariffs, especially in the farm sector.\u003cbr/\u003eJaitley said he had told Zoellick of India''s concerns about recent moves in the US to limit government work being sent to foreign companies, a trend called outsourcing.\u003cbr/\u003eZoellick said there had been a lot of anxiety about the loss of jobs in the US.\u003cbr/\u003eSome 250-thousand American call center jobs such as customer service and accounting have been transferred to India and the Philippines since 2001.\u003cbr/\u003eZoellick said the differences between India and the US over outsourcing of jobs could be overcome through more
