Various of people in cinema bar\u003cbr/\u003eLive from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, close up and in high definition, musical dramas by Verdi, Humperdinck and Puccini have been selling out at many of about 600 theatres worldwide, with more screens added each month. \u003cbr/\u003eOn a recent weekend, spectators spent $1.65 million to push Charles Gounod's \"Romeo and Juliet\" to No. 11 in U.S. box office gross receipts, vying against new Hollywood films, according to Variety magazine. \u003cbr/\u003eOpera lovers queue for tickets to the New York Metropolitan Opera's performance of Verdi's Macbeth in New York and Prague.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Kino Aero cinema in the Czech capital is one of the participating movie theatres. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cinema's manager Ivo Anderle says that they hope to bring the New York Opera live to other areas of the Czech Republic soon.  \u003cbr/\u003eBack in New York, the atmosphere in the production gallery in tense, as the team are aware that the eyes of the world are upon them. \u003cbr/\u003eAs Verdi's \"Macbeth\" was beamed to cinemas across the world, the production team sat in a trailer on the street behind the Met, directing a crew of a dozen who were literally calling the shots for 13 cameras inside the house, some moving robotically on a track just inches above the foot of the stage, providing cinematic-style drama. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Met's general manager, Peter Gelb says that it is a thrill for the artists to perform has such vast global audiences of upto 100,000. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says that \" when the stakes are highest, the greatest performers perform the best.\" \u003cbr/\u003eBut it is not only far flung cinema audiences that are enjoying the show. \u003cbr/\u003eIn downtown Manhattan, opera lovers for whom the Met is too expensive or elitist, crammed into another cinema to share the experience. \u003cbr/\u003eFor \"Macbeth,\" hundreds of venues around the country sold out, including the three New York theatres showing it, despite the fact that tickets for the actual performance were still available at the opera house on Manhattan's West Side, but only at higher prices. \u003cbr/\u003ePrice aside, some fans actually prefer the movie experience.\u003cbr/\u003eCrag Chesler says that a movie theatre is more accessible and they don't serve popcorn at the Met. \u003cbr/\u003eChesler watched \"Macbeth\" at the Regal Union Square Cinema, about 50 blocks south of the Met. \u003cbr/\u003eMary Jo Heath, a Senior Producer for the Met series says that it is great for Met who can't get to the Met, \"the Met can come to you\". \u003cbr/\u003eAnother New York cinema goer Joan Bloom, says that although she and her husband go to the Met regularly, she enjoyed the movie version even more. \u003cbr/\u003eMost spectators buy their tickets online. The next of this season's eight Met shows, on Feb. 16, is Puccini's \"Manon Lescaut.\" \u003cbr/\u003e\"Click on your country,\" instructs the Met Web link for the HD series, popping up local US theatres for the shows based on any postcode. \u003cbr/\u003eIf you click on the Czech Republic, the site says: \"Rezervace vstupenek\", meaning ticket reservations for the Kino Aero theatre in Prague. \u003cbr/\u003eIn Prague audience members enjoyed the performance of 'Macbeth'. \u003cbr/\u003ePetra Nova says she was surprised that opera was so popular. \u003cbr/\u003eEva Vonkova, says that she was apprehensive and this new approach was a new experience for her. \u003cbr/\u003eJiri Novotny says he is fan of opera, but as he does not have the chance to visit New York, this is a good way for him to experience the performance 'virtually' . \u003cbr/\u003eIn Norway, the Met in shown in a theatre in Tromso, several hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd in Japan, two kabuki theatres, in Tokyo and Kyoto, turn into opera houses. \u003cbr/\u003eThe cost of each transmission, including satellite feeds, equipment and crew, is about $1 million, in addition to the $2 or $3 million of each new Met production, according to Gelb. \u003cbr/\u003eThe telecasts are the brainchild of the former television producer and Sony recording executive who took over America's premier opera house in the fall of 2006. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the time, no more than about 75 percent of tickets for actual shows were selling and the audience was aging. \u003cbr/\u003eThis season, Met ticket sales have topped 90 percent so far and the telecasts are reaching New York's public schools, and younger viewers elsewhere. \u003cbr/\u003eThe HD shows, which started last year, are part of Gelb's effort to \"shatter the elitist image of opera,\" in addition to Sirius satellite and regular radio broadcasts, iPod downloads, Internet streaming, TV transmissions, sales of DVDs produced by the Met, and ads on subway cars and buses. \u003cbr/\u003eThe San Francisco Opera is preparing for similar scrutiny when it starts offering shows to about 200 theatres in March. \u003cbr/\u003eThe six shows will be taped during a performance, for later transmission. \u003cbr/\u003eItaly's La Scala is already showing several taped productions per season in US theatres, while the Royal Opera in London is considering its own programme.
