are shooting guns at the opposing team. \u003cbr/\u003eFor this is paintball! \u003cbr/\u003eThe rat-tat-tat of paintball guns firing, the thud of paintballs hitting inflatable pylons scattered across the field, all part of the familiar rush of sound and action at the start of a paintball match. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo teams of seven players each face off on a field 180 feet (56 metres) long and 100 feet (30 metres) wide.  \u003cbr/\u003eEach team has seven minutes to attack, pushing their way forward toward the ultimate goal of getting the flag at the opposite end of the field. \u003cbr/\u003eBut if a player is hit by a paintball, they are out of the match.\u003cbr/\u003eAccording to paintball event promoters, the sport which began as a weekend pastime in the woodlands of rural America, is now an arena sport with a global following. \u003cbr/\u003eEarlier this month, some of the best US and European paintball teams faced off in San Diego, California in a major paintball competition.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe competition known as the Super 7 World Series of Paintball, is sponsored by the National Professional Paintball League (NPPL). \u003cbr/\u003eAbout two hundred teams compete in the World Series of Paintball, which is made up of five events held across the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eAnywhere from ten to fifteen of those teams come from abroad, mostly Europe, Canada, Latin America and Japan. \u003cbr/\u003eAt the top of NPPL is a professional division of eighteen teams, complete with sponsors and star players. \u003cbr/\u003eThe competition also includes semi-professional and amateur divisions, with teams at all levels going for thousands of dollars in prize money. \u003cbr/\u003eThey battle to earn points for the ultimate title of World Series Champion in each division. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd it's not just men playing paintball, the NPPL is co-ed!\u003cbr/\u003eOne of the competitors in the World Series is the all-women team Femmes Fatale.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Femmes are truly a national team, made up of players from across the United States. \u003cbr/\u003eTeam captain Tami Adamson got into paintball about six years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eAdamson is a paintballer, a wife and a mother who's still trying to explain her hobby to her friends.   \u003cbr/\u003eMatt Green originally from Birmingham, England, now works with NPPL as an announcer for their World Series matches. \u003cbr/\u003eGreen's love of the game began with a single day spent on the paintball pitch. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it takes more than love of the game to make it big in paintball, it takes money! \u003cbr/\u003ePlayers spend hundreds of dollars on gear, including paintball guns, which can cost more than a thousand US dollars each (525 British pounds) along with travel expense between events. \u003cbr/\u003eBut paintball enthusiasts say it's all worth it. \u003cbr/\u003eThe mad dash for paintball glory, the sight and sound of paintball guns
