Various of bales of Sceletium in warehouse, packaged for shipping\u003cbr/\u003eFor thousands of years South Africa's San tribe have used an ancient herb to tackle depression and anxiety, but now the plant is part of an historic deal which will also secure their financial future.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd campaigners fighting the exploitation and destruction of remote areas by drugs companies say it's a triumph for biodiversity.\u003cbr/\u003eIt looks like any dried grass, but this plant has the power to transform people's lives.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's called Sceletium and it's been used by hunter gatherers in this region since ancient times.\u003cbr/\u003eIt contains a substance found in serotonin, a chemical produced in the brain, to fight depression, stress and anxiety.\u003cbr/\u003eThe herb is believed to alter moods and increase a sense of well being.\u003cbr/\u003eSeventy-four year-old Johanna Jass is one of many elders here who still rely on Sceletium tortuosum.\u003cbr/\u003eHere it's called Kougoed (cooghood), meaning chewing stuff.  \u003cbr/\u003eSceletium's been used by the San and Nama tribes as a chew to combat tiredness and relieve thirst and hunger.\u003cbr/\u003eDecades ago researchers arrived here to investigate the land's botanical resources.\u003cbr/\u003eThey studied how the effect of the plant on local people and how it was used by traditional healers who've always had to rely on local plants.\u003cbr/\u003eNow it's considered to be South Africa's most coveted botanical asset because it has such a lucrative commercial future.\u003cbr/\u003eDr. Nigel Gericke of HGH Pharmaceuticals says Sceletium has the potential for many uses.\u003cbr/\u003eHe became interested in the plant after he discovered an old diary entry written Dutch pioneers in the Cape.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe plant takes the name from the skeletal markings on it's lower leaves. \u003cbr/\u003eNewcomers to the area have always been alive to the possibilities of Sceletium.\u003cbr/\u003eGericke reads out an extract that says \"because of the effect, pleasant smell and cordial taste, one could expect considerable profit from it's cultivation.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe author of that entry was absolutely right according to Gericke\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"I thought if we could get hold of the plant, we would be able to investigate and discover what chemicals are acting in the plant and how those compounds act on the human brain.\"\u003cbr/\u003eAn array of Sceletium products have appeared on the market.\u003cbr/\u003ePharmacies like this one in Cape Town offer a multitude of herbal remedies.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt's particularly popular for stress and depression.  \u003cbr/\u003eSceletium tortuosom tablets and tinctures are among the newest. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's even being used to help smokers combat addiction.  \u003cbr/\u003ePharmacist Felicia Rubins says the product sells so quickly it's difficult to keep the shelves well stocked. \u003cbr/\u003eThat's partly because of the price. \u003cbr/\u003eA monthly dose costs about twenty US dollars and, as yet, there are no known side effects.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth Africa's introduced laws safeguarding  biodiversity against illegal prospecting two years ago (2008). \u003cbr/\u003eIt's also one of the first nations to force companies to share the profits gained from commercial exploitation of the indigenous flora and fauna. \u003cbr/\u003eThe law doesn't just apply to plants, but also to the use of traditional knowledge and practices of local communities.\u003cbr/\u003eAn international protocol ratified in Nagoya, Japan this year will set the parameters for regulating access to genetic resources and what has become known as bio-prospecting, as well as sharing the benefits with locals.\u003cbr/\u003eLawyer Kabir Bavikatte works for the group Natural Justice.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says \"benefit sharing is a fairly simple idea. Essentially what it says is that if genetic resources or traditional knowledge is used, then something must be given back.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe vast majority of the world's rarest biodiversity is located in developing countries where their value has been prized by local communities.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen it comes to biodiversity South Africa is the third richest after Brazil and Indonesia and in the past it's been subject to  'biopiracy' ,  the illegitimate use of the countries indigenous biological resources. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the past the plant Hoodia has been exploited for its property as an appetite suppressant.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's hoped the first permit granted by the government to HGH will set a precedence for other companies to follow suit.\u003cbr/\u003eIn October 2010 at the !Khwa ttu San Cultural Centre in the Western Cape, the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs handed over the first bio-prospecting permit to HGH Pharmateuticals.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe license also makes Sceletium off-limits to any non-licensed holders.  \u003cbr/\u003eThis aims to protect the plant form illegal picking that might make it extinct.  \u003cbr/\u003eThe popularity of Sceletium makes this a distinct possibility.  \u003cbr/\u003eIt also limits the traditional use by local communities, as now anyone found collecting the plant in the wild is required to have a license to do so. \u003cbr/\u003eThe San people are acknowledged as the primary indigenous knowledge holders of the medicinal and other uses of Sceletium.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut the Paulshoek and Nourivier tribes will also benefit.\u003cbr/\u003eMarianna Lot will be among those to enjoy the wealth that comes out of Sceletium.\u003cbr/\u003eShe says \"because it is such a delicate plant, not everyone can use it if you didn't have a permit. So it's very nice for those of us who remain to make a success out of what's been created for us from this process.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThere's approximately 10 tons of cultivated raw Sceletium in this warehouse (October 2010), waiting for a manufacturer to extract the active ingredient.  \u003cbr/\u003eThat is destined for the USA for further screening where it'll be subjected to tests by the by the National Institute for Mental Health.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the product being marketed as Zembrin will arrive on the market. \u003cbr/\u003eResearch and development of a drug usually takes between 3 to 10 years. \u003cbr/\u003eIt has be synthesised so they have to devise a way of cultivating the plant in large enough quantities without  compromising its chemical make up.\u003cbr/\u003eSouth
