Wide of forest.
Scientists are trawling through the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, hunting for gorillas.
They are conducting a census to check the state of the mountain gorilla population.
The mountain gorilla is king of beasts in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest.
High in the volcanic region of Western Uganda the forest is a world Heritage site and a major tourist attraction.
Once every 5 years, the park also becomes a centre of major scientific research.
Dr Martha Robbins of the Max Planck institute in Germany is a primatologist.
She's currently working with 6 teams of scientists from across East Africa to conduct a gorilla census, the results of which will indicate whether the great apes in this region are on the increase or not.
The last recorded census in 2006 indicated there were 302 gorillas in Uganda's Bwindi and Mt Mgahinga National Parks.
This is the second year Dr Robbins and her teams are using genetic analysis to improve accuracy in the data collected.
"The census we're conducting for the gorillas is one of the most important conservation activities we do for mountain gorillas, we do a census about once every 5 years, but this is the way that we can monitor the size of the population and also get some sort of measure of the effectiveness of conservation strategies that are being used in the park," she says.
The census is conducted with military precision. The park measures 331 squared kilometres and the 6 teams camp out for days, even weeks, collecting gorilla faeces and counting the nests on the ground where the apes sleep.
"Essentially we sweep through the forest, we have 6 teams of people starting in the east moving to the west, moving through very, very intensively looking for fresh gorilla trails, and then if they find these paths that the gorillas make when tracking through the forest we can track back to the nest sites that the gorillas make every night and we can count the number of nest sites that the gorillas make each night. We also collect faeces from the nests which we conduct genetic analysis on and we get a unique genetic identification for each gorilla in the population," says Robbins.
These great apes create huge tourism revenues, with an estimated income of $4.4 million every year, with international visitors spending $500 each to get just one hour to view these majestic creatures.
Gorillas have a poor immune system and are highly susceptible to stress. Tourists with any illness are turned away and group sizes are restricted to 8.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority and the government take their prized possession very seriously and there is great pressure on the results that Dr. Martha and her team will deliver.
The government has taken a number of measures to sensitise communities living around the parks, and while isolated incidents of poaching still occur, levels overall have dramatically reduced, snares used to trap small antelopes are occasionally found caught around gorillas.
Pontius Ezuma is the conservation area manager of Bwindi and Mt Mgahinga National Parks:
"Our aim is to protect them for future generations and they must be there in perpetuity.
