Various of five Bulgarian nurses in court behind bars\u003cbr/\u003eLibya's Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the death sentences of five Bulgarian nurses and a Palestinian doctor convicted of infecting more than 400 children with the AIDS virus.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the verdict issued by Judge Fathi Dahan is not the final word. \u003cbr/\u003eLibya's Supreme Judicial Council, which is headed by the minister of justice, could approve or reject the convictions or set lighter sentences.\u003cbr/\u003eThe five nurses and Palestinian doctor were not present at the hearing.\u003cbr/\u003eIn announcing the verdict, the judge mentioned nothing about a settlement announced on Tuesday by a foundation headed by the Libyan leader's son.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Gadhafi International Foundation for Charity Associations said on Tuesday that the families of the HIV-infected children reached an agreement with the nurses and doctor but would not say whether the deal involved financial compensation for the families.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Sofia families and supporters of the nurses waited outside the Libyan embassy for the verdict.\u003cbr/\u003eThey put up posters and photographs of the nurses proclaiming their innocence and calling for their release.\u003cbr/\u003e\"They have to negotiate whatever they need and let them free. Libya had this AIDS problem long before our nurses arrived there,\" Zorta Anachkova, mother of convicted nurse Christiana Vulcheva said after the verdict had been announced.\u003cbr/\u003eLibyan officials have said the families' acceptance of a compensation settlement is key to resolving the case. \u003cbr/\u003eIt would satisfy Islamic law and allow the death sentence to be withdrawn, they say.\u003cbr/\u003eLibya has been under intense international pressure to free the six, who deny infecting the children. \u003cbr/\u003eThe case has become a sticking point in Libya's attempts to rebuild ties with the United States and Europe. \u003cbr/\u003eUS President George W. Bush called on Libya last month to free the medics.\u003cbr/\u003eThe six began working at the hospital in the city of Benghazi in 1998 and were arrested the next year after more than 400 children there contracted HIV. Fifty of the children have since died.\u003cbr/\u003eThe prosecution insists that the six infected the children intentionally in experiments to find a cure for AIDS.\u003cbr/\u003eDefence experts testified that the children were infected by unhygienic hospital conditions. \u003cbr/\u003eIn their testimony, the workers said the confessions used by the prosecution had been extracted under torture. \u003cbr/\u003eSeveral of the nurses have said they were also raped to force confessions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe medical workers, who have been in custody since 1999, were convicted and sentenced to death in 2004.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the Supreme Court ordered a retrial after an international outcry over the verdicts.\u003cbr/\u003eIn a ruling that shocked many in Europe, the second trial ended with the same verdict in December, despite a scientific report weeks earlier saying HIV was rampant in the hospital before the six began working there.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo Libyans - a police officer and a doctor - were put on trial on charges of torturing them and were later acquitted.\u003cbr/\u003eThe six medics were then put on trial for defamation. They were acquitted of defamation in May.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Gadhafi International Foundation for Charity Associations, which announced the settlement on Tuesday, is headed by Seif al Islam Gadhafi, son of long-time Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi. \u003cbr/\u003eHe has been active for months in trying to resolve the case of the medics.\u003cbr/\u003eGadhafi had tried in the past to reach a deal by which Bulgaria would compensate the victims. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the Bulgarian government rejected the proposal, saying it would imply the nurses' guilt.\u003cbr/\u003eOften referred to as \"blood money,\" compensation for death or suffering is a legal provision in the traditional Islamic code that is widespread in parts of the Middle East and North
