Film clip: "Mad Men"
Portraying the lives and times of the men, and women, in a 1960 Madison Avenue ad agency, "Mad Man" has proven an easy sell to a blast of critics - many of whom have praised the hour long drama as one of the best new TV series of the season.
Jon Hamm plays creative director, Don Draper. He says in a broader context the show is about American Culture and what makes Americans happy.
Executive produced by Matthew Weiner of "The Sopranos" the series offers a look at the swinging cocktail generation, where business people smoked like chimneys and drank like fish - and often at their desks at work.
But the show isn't passing judgement on those from the era, Weiner told the Associated Press. In fact, he said many of the issues with these mad men remain in the world today but are not as obvious due to political correctness. "What I am saying about the period is that it is a lot like now. I think things don't change on some level, that manners have changed and a lot of the human attitudes have gone underground and I am writing about people dealing with the issues in their lives. But, it is harsh."
Looks in the era were crisp and tailored, but, as per the series, their lives were an absolute mess. Racism, homophobia and misogyny were rampant -- making the series and its characters often quite hard to swallow.
"Of course when you look back on it, you tend to forget all the mistakes that were made or tough parts of society, culture and all of the other things that have wrapped up into that" said Jon Hamm. "When you remove that veil, you can look back on it with a much more critical eye and a much clearer vision of what actually happened and you don't have the baggage of having lived through it. She told AP of the difficulties she has squeezing into her character's outfits. "Those things are like armour and it's a little bit of a work out to get into them, but it changes your posture, it changes the way you walk." She told the AP. " I've said before, it gives me a whole swagger that I didn't have before and these dresses are like airbrushed on. They certainly make you carry yourself differently and it helps you get into character so quickly, it is really sort of fantastic."
The series has earned raves for its set design, which, as per Weiner, offers a realistic portrait of the period by not only including clothes, fixtures and items of the time, but also earlier periods, as one would likely find in a real 1960 office.
According to Weiner the knack to great set design is to avoid over glamorising an era. "You can present the past either in a completely glamorous way, which is actually much cheaper than what we do, where everything is neat and tidy and everything is from that year." He said. "So if you are shooting 1960 you go to Vogue magazine, you go to Architectural Digest and you just fly everything out there that belongs there and everything is from that day and when you start thinking about reality you say 'no,' there is a lot of stuff that is left over, there are antiques, there are people who are dressed from the 50s, the 40s, the 30s just like there are people dressed now from the 90s and the 80s and the 70s."
Many critics also have pointed to work by leading mad man Jon Hamm as "star making."
Jon's response was humble. "I don't know, it's impossible to have any kind of perspective on that.
