The only developed industry is the once-prosperous Georgian wine industry. Head of State and presidental candidate Eduard Shevardnadze recently honoured the Georgian wine-making tradition during Tbilisoba, the annual wine festival held in Tbilisi, the capital. Thousands of Georgians took part and the wine was plentiful--in spite of the hardships facing the wine industry. This year's harvest was twice the size of last year's and collective farm directors like Teimuraz Maisuradze are optimistic about the future. He is hopeful that a new Georgian currency will help stabilize the country's economy. The century-old winery Savane  in Soviet times was called State Factory Number One.  Once a leading winery in the former Soviet bloc, Savane is now fighting for a place in the tough international wine market. In order to make a profit, Savane has begun to sell fine wines and spirits from a collection assembled in the 1970s. The collection includes late Soviet dictator Josef Stalin's hoard of alcoholic beverages from around the world, including a 350-year-old Hungarian vodka and a 250-year-old Polish liqueur.
