it was one of his opponent's Texas congressman Ron Paul that secured the all important second place on Tuesday as the remaining challengers attempt to establish themselves as the main alternative to Romney.\u003cbr/\u003eWith a sizable win in New Hampshire on the heels of his narrow victory last week in the Iowa caucuses, Romney has strong momentum going into the crucial - and likely more difficult - South Carolina primary on January 21.\u003cbr/\u003eReturns from 21 percent of the state's precincts showed Romney with 35 percent of the vote ahead of Paul on 25 percent \u003cbr/\u003eFormer Utah Governor Jon Huntsman finished in third place with 17 percent while Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House of Representatives, and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum both had 10 percent.\u003cbr/\u003ePaul was hoping that the wave of youthful discontent that propelled him to third place in Iowa's Republican presidential caucuses would continue in New Hampshire.\u003cbr/\u003eThe 76-year-old has been able to credit his success so far by appealing to wide range of supporters including college students, veterans and tea party activists in a sign of the divided Grand Old Party (GOP) struggles ahead. \u003cbr/\u003eA physician, author and congressman, Paul was a presidential candidate way back in 1988 for the Libertarian Party and again as a candidate for the Republican nomination in 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eThis time though Paul has waged a far more structured campaign, he has raised more money and advertised aggressively on television, attacking his fellow candidate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, throughout November. \u003cbr/\u003ePaul rose steadily in Iowa polls late last fall as Texas Governor Rick Perry, Minnesota Representative Michele Bachmann, who has since quit the race and Herman Cain, the Georgia businessman who quit the race in December, all struggled to sustain early curiosity as potential outsider challengers to establishment candidate Romney.\u003cbr/\u003ePaul's calls for strict spending cuts and the abolition of the Federal Reserve are popular rallying cries for conservatives, while his opposition to foreign military intervention and desire to close overseas military bases appeal to younger voters. \u003cbr/\u003eThe physician-turned-congressman has become an iconic figure for angry conservatives and strict constitutional constructionists fed up with government overreach. \u003cbr/\u003eSome supporters say they simply admire the steadfastness of his beliefs. \u003cbr/\u003e\"He's
