Orthodox Christmas celebrations on January 7. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, Theofilos III, arrived at the church with priests and other attendants to take part in the cleanup. \u003cbr/\u003eChristmas falls on 7 January for Orthodox Christians in Greece, Russia, Serbia, the Holy Land, Egypt and other Eastern Orthodox churches.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Church of the Nativity is built on the site where Christians believe Jesus Christ was born in a stable more than 2,000 years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is run jointly by three branches of Christianity - the Roman Catholic Church, the Greek Orthodox Church and the Armenian Church.\u003cbr/\u003eEach group controls its own section of the church. \u003cbr/\u003eTensions were running high between the Greek Orthodox and Armenian priests on Tuesday and an argument broke out over an aspect of the cleaning. \u003cbr/\u003eA Palestinian policeman mediated between the priests and a group of police officers wearing protective helmets were on standby to prevent further violence. \u003cbr/\u003eTwo years ago a brawl broke out when Greek Orthodox priests set up ladders to clean the walls and ceilings of their part of the church. \u003cbr/\u003eArmenian priests claimed that the ladders encroached on their portion of the church, leading members of the two groups to exchange angry words that quickly turned to blows. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Orthodox Church observes Christmas on 7 January because it retained the Julian calendar for its liturgical schedule, while other branches of the Christian church
