Close up kernel of corn coming out from maize sheller        \u003cbr/\u003eMore than a year after China joined the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the impact on its farmers has been both positive and negative.\u003cbr/\u003eInefficient Chinese grain farmers were expected to be hit badly by imports of cheap foreign crops.      \u003cbr/\u003eBut due to a small increase in China's corn and wheat harvests - and higher grain prices on international markets, China's grain imports were far less than expected.      \u003cbr/\u003eBut at a news conference on the sidelines of the annual legislative session Monday, Chen Xiwen, a senior government agricultural specialist said Chinese farmers were still facing serious challenges from outside markets.\u003cbr/\u003eChen also said labour-intensive activities where China's low labour costs were expected to give it an advantage - such as the cultivation of ornamental flowers and some fishing industries - haven't benefited it as much as had been expected.      \u003cbr/\u003eHe said non-tariff barriers erected by importing nations, including tougher hygiene and purity standards for products such as shellfish, had affected some local production.      \u003cbr/\u003eIn January last year, the European Union (EU) barred some Chinese produce after saying it found traces of banned antibiotics in shrimp, rabbit meat and honey. \u003cbr/\u003eThe EU is China's fourth-largest market for fish products, and exporters suffered losses of up to five (m) million US dollars.      \u003cbr/\u003eBeijing called the ban unjustifiable and protectionist, and retaliated with a ban on European cosmetics imports, citing fears of contamination with animal byproducts that might contain mad-cow disease.     \u003cbr/\u003eAbout 800 (m) million of China's 1.3 (b) billion people are still categorised as farmers.
