Wide of ministers leaving news conference\u003cbr/\u003eThe death toll from more than five days of post election violence in Kenya rose above 300, rights groups said on Wednesday as shanty towns burned and thousands were left homeless.\u003cbr/\u003eThe violence was sparked by charges President Mwai Kibaki stole his way to re-election; even his election chief was quoted on Wednesday as saying he could not be sure who won.\u003cbr/\u003eThe political rift quickly took on a tribal element in what has been one of Africa's most stable democracies.\u003cbr/\u003eAerial images from the towns of Kakamega and Eldoret showed the aftermath of Tuesday's violence. \u003cbr/\u003eThe remains of burnt vehicles and homes could be seen in Kakamega - as well as a roadblock on a road leading to the town. \u003cbr/\u003eAerials of the Rift Valley city of Eldoret - about 185 miles (300 kilometres) northwest of Nairobi - showed the area just one day after up to 50 ethnic Kikuyus were killed. \u003cbr/\u003eIn one of the worst attacks, a mob set fire to a church on Tuesday, killing up to 50 members of Kibaki's Kikuyu tribe who had taken refuge inside.\u003cbr/\u003eMeanwhile, expatriates and aid workers were being evacuated from western Kenya - along with those who can afford the price of a helicopter. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They feel that fear of tribe turning against tribe and of the consequences that would happen if that comes,\" said Ellen Petry Leanse, a US aid worker who was being evacuated from Kakamega.\u003cbr/\u003eLocal residents clamoured for the limited number of seats on one of the evacuation helicopters - with most getting left behind due to limited space. \u003cbr/\u003eOpposition leader, Raila Odinga accused the government of stoking the chaos, telling The Associated Press in an interview that Kibaki's administration is guilty of genocide.\u003cbr/\u003e\"What is happening is genocide on a grand scale because we are seeing the security forces of Mr. Kibaki shooting innocent civilians who are basically just expressing their democratic right of protest against rigging of elections,\" Odinga said.\u003cbr/\u003e\"This is something that is not acceptable internationally and that's why we are appealing to the international community to come to the assistance of Kenya,\" he added. \u003cbr/\u003eThe independent Kenya Human Rights Commission and the International Federation for Human Rights said in a joint statement more than 300 people had been killed since the 27 December vote.\u003cbr/\u003eThe United Nations cited Kenyan police as saying 70-thousand people had been displaced in five days of violence. \u003cbr/\u003eAround 5,400 people have also fled to neighbouring Uganda and several hundred people have also fled to Tanzania, said officials from both countries.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the Nairobi shanty town of Mathare on Wednesday, mothers clutching wide-eyed infants and suitcases were evacuated by riot police while angry young people armed with machetes and axes heaped abuse on the police as the shanty town burned.\u003cbr/\u003eWhile Kibaki and Odinga have support from across the tribal spectrum, the young people responsible for the violence tend to see politics in strictly ethnic terms.\u003cbr/\u003eKenya has more than 40 tribes, and political leaders have often used unemployed and uneducated young men to intimidate opponents.\u003cbr/\u003eKibaki's Kikuyu, Kenya's largest ethnic group, are accused of using their dominance of politics and business to the detriment of others. \u003cbr/\u003eOdinga is from the Luo tribe, a smaller but still major tribe that says it has been marginalised.\u003cbr/\u003e\"You are seeing a lot of anger against the Kikuyu community. perpetrators of crimes \"must be made aware that genocide is a crime against humanity\" and was punishable under both Kenyan and international law.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Even the international community
