Lebanese army jeep patrolling
Lebanon's majority bloc, known as the March 14 coalition, declared victory early on Monday, as local television stations reported the faction had successfully fended off a serious challenge by the Shiite militant group Hezbollah and its allies to grab the majority in parliament.
Official results for Sunday's election were not expected until later on Monday, but the winners were already celebrating by shooting in the air, setting off fireworks and driving around in honking motorcades.
OTV, the television station of one of Hezbollah's key Christian allies, former army chief Michel Aoun, conceded that the party's candidates who challenged their competitors in several Christian districts had been defeated, preventing a victory for the Hezbollah coalition.
But Aoun was able to hang on to his representation in other districts.
Aoun fought a failed "war of liberation" against the Syrians in one of the last bloody chapters of the ruinous 15 year civil war and is allied with Hezbollah through a memorandum of understanding.
Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation, a leading private Christian TV station, projected the March 14 coalition to win 67 seats in the next parliament, with 52 for Hezbollah and its allies, two for independents and seven undecided.
That would almost replicate the deadlock that existed in the outgoing parliament, in which the coalition bloc had 70 seats and an alliance of Hezbollah and other Shiite and Christian factions had 58.
Supporters of Saad al-Hariri's Future Movement party celebrated in Beirut, with their faces painted in the party colours as they danced and waved flags.
Hariri is the son of assassinated Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri.
One supporter described it as a "glorious day" adding that this was not to be Hezbollah's leader Hassan Nasrallah moment to celebrate.
They were celebrating Hariri reclaiming his seat in parliament as well as reports of a majority victory for the March 14 coalition.
Saad al-Hariri later spoke at a separate location in Beirut saying the winner from the elections was "democracy" and the victory was for Lebanon.
In Sidon crowds gathered to cheer on Prime Minister Fuad Saniora and fellow Sidon Member of Parliament, Bahia Hariri - the sister of the late Rafik Hariri - both of whom reclaimed their seats in parliament.
Saniora is the incumbent member of parliament after winning the seat from Saad in the 2005 election that followed the assassination of Rafik al-Hariri.
Prior to the 2005 election the Sidon parliamentary seat was held by Saad's brother Moustafa Saad.
In Tripoli, supporters of the March 14 coalition took to the streets claiming victory as the military patrolled the streets eager to avoid the violence that has been common in the city in the past.
Tripoli was the scene of violent clashes early last year - centred around the Jebel Mohsen and Bab el-Tebbeneh area - between Sunni militiamen and forces loyal to Hezbollah.
The tense situation led many to fear a resurgence of the kind of violence between internal factions that led Lebanon down the path to civil war decades ago.
The election could determine the future of Lebanon following years of political turmoil, instability and infighting between factions which repeatedly brought the government to a stalemate and nearly crippled the embattled country.
Sunday's election put the key players in the current ruling-majority government, widely known as the March 14 coalition, up against the Hezbollah-dominated opposition alliance, known as the March 8 coalition.
If the opposition were to win, it would be the first time Hezbollah was positioned to play a major role in the formation of Lebanon's government.
However, many feared that a win for Hezbollah and its allies in the parliamentary vote would boost the influence of Hezbollah backers Syria and Iran in the region.
But Hezbollah's Christian allies argue that a victory by their coalition will not have such a dramatic impact and will ensure peace in a nation where tensions among the Christian, Sunni and Shiite populations have repeatedly threatened to explode into civil war in the past four years.
They argue that involving Hezbollah more deeply in the political process - rather than isolating it - is the only way to bridge sectarian divides in the country.
The race for the 128-member parliament is an early test of US President Barack Obama's efforts to forge Middle East peace.
Lebanon has long been a main front in what many see as a power struggle between two main camps in the Mideast: western powers, including the US and France along with their allies in the Middle East most notable Saudi Arabia on one side and Iran and Syria on the other.
A win by Hezbollah would have boosted the influence of its backers Iran and Syria and risked pushing one of the region's most volatile nations into international isolation and possibly into more conflict with Israel.
So any change in Lebanon's delicate political balance will resonate beyond its borders.
There are some 3.2 (m) million eligible voters out of a population of four (m) million.
Official results are expected as early as Monday afternoon but already Monday morning residents in Beirut awoke to newspaper headlines declaring the victory of the March 14 coalition.
Authorities have deployed some 50-thousand soldiers and police to ensure security throughout the election.

<button aria-expanded='false' aria-label='Read more description'
