Wide shot of poster showing hen and kit \u003cbr/\u003eFears of an impending worldwide avian flu pandemic have led to strong demand for orders of a newly launched diagnostic kit.\u003cbr/\u003eThe kits, made by a Singapore company, mean the avian influenza H5N1 virus can be detected quickly so patients can be isolated to prevent further infection.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists in Singapore believe this small box could hold the key to life and death. \u003cbr/\u003eIt's a sensitive testing device able to detect a gene specific to the H5N1 strain in under four hours.\u003cbr/\u003eSince its launch two months ago, orders have been coming in from medical professionals all over the world.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists at Veredus Laboratories have been putting together half a million test reactions a month.\u003cbr/\u003eSo far, bird flu poses only a limited threat to humans because it can't be spread easily from person to person.  \u003cbr/\u003eBut there are fears the strain may acquire this ability and cause a flu pandemic that could kill millions worldwide.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (English)\u003cbr/\u003e\"If you are talking about the human situation then you would like to know it very quickly. In this test kit we have, it allows you to complete the test in a fraction of that time in about two to four hours. It is so important that if there is a human to human transmission that you would then need to sequester (isolate) these patients who are really infected with avian flu from those who aren't.  Because the symptoms are very much the same in the early part of the flu infection and those who don't have avian flu should not be kept in the same place because it will only mean that over time they will end up getting avian flu and that is not good.\"\u003cbr/\u003eSUPERCAPTION: Ren Ee Chee, Deputy Director, Genome Institute\u003cbr/\u003eThe kit looks for DNA patterns of the H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the lab H5N1 virus gene is enlarged and then viewed with the help of ultra violet light - an illuminated band indicates if it is present.\u003cbr/\u003eRosemary Tan, who founded Veredus, says past diagnosis has relied on clinical symptoms, resulting in cases often being mis-diagnosed.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (English) \u003cbr/\u003e\"These kits are made using DNA diagnostic technologies. We actually look for specifically the target gene in the H5N1 strain so that this gene can be amplified many many times. So that it can be detected at the early onset of disease. So potentially the kit can actually look into infected individuals or birds or eggs as early as maybe day two or day three of infection or day two or day three of disease.\"
