But also many people who went abroad found out that the economic and working conditions you get abroad are not much better than those you can get here in Spain. Mid of main square\u003cbr/\u003eAlmost four years into its worst economic recession in modern times, Spain is facing an exodus of talent.\u003cbr/\u003eThe latest economic indicators show there's reason for limited optimism - but the crisis has taken away jobs, and wiped out the hopes of prosperity of an entire generation.\u003cbr/\u003eRafael Gonzalez del Castillo - or Rafa as he is known -  is a budding architect in a nation that's gone through one of the worst building busts in modern times.\u003cbr/\u003eLike many others, he is having to lower down his expectations and consider whether a life in exile will be better than at home.   \u003cbr/\u003eZaragoza, Rafa's home town, is off the beaten tourist track in Northeastern Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eThe city saw better days in 2008, when it hosted the world's Expo and commissioned British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid to built its Pavillion Bridge over the River Ebro.\u003cbr/\u003eBut just as the fair finished Spain's economy contracted for the first time in 15 years and officially entered a recession in February 2009.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Pavilion - a source of inspiration for local architecture students - is now a reminder of a time of plenty that new generations are unlikely to savour. \u003cbr/\u003eRafa loves architecture. But he knows his future as an architect might prove elusive.\u003cbr/\u003eOver the summer he was in crisis: his professors had found major flaws with his final project to qualify as an architect.\u003cbr/\u003eNow he's back on track: He resubmitted his design for a riverside greenhouse and terraced farmhouse and got a thumbs up.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Rafa has no illusions in today's crisis-wracked Spain. \u003cbr/\u003eHe and (m) millions of other students have just been squeezed by a hike in university fees. \u003cbr/\u003eAnd he knows that once he gets his diploma the hard part begins: Spain's building industry is in crisis and youth unemployment is above 50 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eRafa has been forced to lower his expectations. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Like many people say the crisis allows us to innovate. Maybe we shouldn't focus so much on the creative side of architecture but on projects that can make you win a bit of money.\"\u003cbr/\u003eThe sight of abandoned building sites and yellow cranes standing against the blue sky constitutes one of the most common urban landscapes of crisis-ridden Spain.\u003cbr/\u003eThis is Puerto Venecia, an ambitious  real estate project outside Zaragoza that four years ago came to a virtual halt.\u003cbr/\u003eThe only buildings still under construction have been seized by the local council and will be sold as subsidised flats for socially disadvantaged people.\u003cbr/\u003eEl Periodico is the main journal in the region of Aragon of which Zaragoza is the provincial capital. \u003cbr/\u003eJorge Heras Pastor is its chief economics reporter.\u003cbr/\u003eHeras explains that the situation in the real estate market will not improve in the short term and, as a result, many architects are looking to moving abroad to pursue their careers.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We have been through months, if not years, with the real estate market stagnant. And as, a consequence to this, especially in the last two years, are starting to look for jobs out of the country,\" Heras says.\u003cbr/\u003eThe construction industry was crushed by the implosion of a real estate bubble in 2008 with more than one (m) million jobs lost in that industry alone.\u003cbr/\u003eRafa has started learning Portuguese as he considers moving to Brazil to find work - as the rapidly developing Latin American country prepares to host the football (soccer) World Cup and Summer Olympics.\u003cbr/\u003eLike (m) millions of other young Spaniards trapped in the nation's devastating economic spiral, he says he'll jump at any opportunity for rewarding work.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The situation of young graduates wanting to move abroad to get a job hasn't changed much in the past months. But I think I will be able to stay here,\" Eduardo insists.\u003cbr/\u003eThe older generations fear an exodus of talent will leave Spain unable to recover. \u003cbr/\u003e\"What we lose as working force will be won by the rest of Europe,\" Aurelio Martinez says. \"Spain will remain as ever as a place for dancing and partying. I will study English so I can leave the country as soon as I can to look for other alternatives,\" she says.\u003cbr/\u003eSince 2009, when Europe's financial crisis hit full-bore, the number of Spaniards in their late teens, 20s and early 30s leaving the country has increased 52 percent from about 12,500 to nearly 20,000 according to the government statistics agency on August 1, 2012.\u003cbr/\u003eYoung and talented Europeans from other hurting eurozone nations Greece, Ireland, Italy and Portugal are also abandoning home not only for stronger European countries but surging former European colonies in Africa, Asia and the Americas.\u003cbr/\u003eAP's Class of 2012 is:\u003cbr/\u003eAthina in Athens. She's mastered English in four years studying at a private university. It's a skill that may not help her much as she hunts for work while hard-right thugs roam her blighted neighbourhood.\u003cbr/\u003eLucy in London has graduated from fashion school brimming with optimism. It took just a week for real life to step in: She fell victim to a scam that left her broke and desperate for work.\u003cbr/\u003eMoira in Paris left her widowed mom in Normandy for a \"bohemian life\" at the Sorbonne. Now the communications grad is heading into the real world.\u003cbr/\u003eLutz in Berlin graduated near the top of his class with a degree in electrical engineering in Europe's top economy.
