Exchange of gifts\u003cbr/\u003eWu Shu-jen, the Taiwanese First Lady continued her visit to the capital of the United States on Tuesday.\u003cbr/\u003eAt an event organized by a conservative American think tank, the American Enterprise Institute, she spoke of her devotion to democracy.\u003cbr/\u003eWu suggested that the greatest gift Taiwan could give the Asia-Pacific region would be to help spread democracy.\u003cbr/\u003eShe never mentioned China during her remarks. But she referred to Taiwan as a \"country,\" consistent with incremental moves toward independence that Taiwan has taken under her husband's leadership to China's chagrin.\u003cbr/\u003eTaiwan's status remains highly sensitive for China, which sees the island as a renegade province.\u003cbr/\u003eFirst Lady Wu emphasized the fact that she was able to come to the United States, meet lawmakers and scholars, and deliver her remarks was a testament to the strong friendship between the United States and Taiwan.\u003cbr/\u003eIn deference to China, US visits by high-level Taiwanese officials have been rare, though less so under the Bush administration.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are no barriers to a visit by Chen's wife, a frail woman who has used a wheel chair since 1985 after being hit by a truck. She and her husband believe the incident was perpetrated by political opponents.\u003cbr/\u003eShe is the first first lady of Taiwan to visit Washington since Madame Chiang Kai-shek, wife of the
