Family watching television\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of Iraqi demonstrators calling for peace marched on a US blockade in Najaf on Thursday, as fighting intensified between Mahdi Army militia loyal to a radical Shiite cleric and coalition and Iraqi troops.\u003cbr/\u003eThe demonstrators chanted and waved banners, with some directing their anger at Iraqi police positioned near the blockade.\u003cbr/\u003eUS forces earlier stormed a Najaf house belonging to the cleric Muqtada al-Sadr who has led a deadly uprising against coalition and Iraqi troops for more than a week, as American and Iraqi soldiers launched a major assault on his militiamen. \u003cbr/\u003eAl-Sadr, who has vowed to fight \"until the last drop of my blood has been spilled,\" was not there at the militia are taking refuge.\u003cbr/\u003eUS commanders say interim Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi would have to approve any operation at the shrine itself, and an operation that involves entering the shrine would likely involve Iraqi national guard troops, not US forces.\u003cbr/\u003eNajaf governor Adnan Al-Zurufi, who has been a staunch supporter of US forces, said city council members were working to defuse the crisis - though efforts to negotiate an end to the violence over the past week had failed and it appeared unlikely that any new one would
