This is a celebration of being reunited with our true motherland - Russia - a place, in principle, we never forgot. We are happy, we are glad,\" said one local resident, Elena Belyavtseva, out celebrating in the city's Lenin Square.\u003cbr/\u003eThe hastily organised referendum about whether to break away from Ukraine and join Russia, was held in defiance of broad condemnation from the international community, which has described the process as illegitimate.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in Sevastopol, the naval port where the Russian Black Sea Fleet is based under a lease agreement with Ukraine, enthusiasm for the referendum had been high.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd late on Sunday, there was much celebration on the streets of the city.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The expectation is that finally our region will be developed, that finally Russia will take care of us and we in reality will become a prosperous place,\" said resident Elena Goryacheva.\u003cbr/\u003e1.
