but the people here know that it will probably only be a matter of  time before the regime of President Mobutu is overthrown.\u003cbr/\u003eLaurent Kabila's advancing rebel force closes in on the city every day.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd when they arrive, many will greet them as liberating heroes rather than aggressive  invaders.\u003cbr/\u003eSuch is the growing unpopularity of Mobutu's decrepit government.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople here want an end to the corruption and economic waste which have tarnished  their country for decades.\u003cbr/\u003eMany have long suspected the government of plundering resources.\u003cbr/\u003eThey're angry that President Mobutu is one of the richest men in the continent, whilst  Zaire remains one of the world's poorest nations.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Kinshasa, ordinary people scrape together a living by trading on the black market.\u003cbr/\u003eBut selling edible worms scarcely provides them with enough money to survive - let  alone afford any luxuries like education.\u003cbr/\u003eTo make matters worse, the cost of living in Kinshasa is apparently as expensive as  some European cities\u003cbr/\u003eThe population has been hit by continual devaluation of their inflation-prone currency.\u003cbr/\u003eSpiralling prices have eroded the value of most bank notes, and with them, many  people's life savings. \u003cbr/\u003eIn 1993, soldiers rioted after the introduction of a new five-thousand note - they were  each presented with one of the new bills, and later found them to be worthless. \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the reasons for the lack of resistance to Kabila's advance is Zaire's failure to pay  its soldiers regularly.\u003cbr/\u003eAnd when they are paid, they tend to receive much less than they were originally  promised.\u003cbr/\u003eSet against this backdrop is the continued wrangling at the top of the political system.    \u003cbr/\u003eThe hole in the public finances is now being blamed on former Prime Minister Kengo wa  Dondo.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's alleged that he stole millions of dollars from state funds.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE: (French)\u003cbr/\u003e\"In the government, Kengo was in charge of the ministry of defence and he distributed  to the military the money given to the war fund.
