train, which combines electric power and a regular diesel engine, is the world's first hybrid train. \u003cbr/\u003eThis two-car train in rural northern Japan is the latest entrant in the battle against global warming.\u003cbr/\u003eRegular passenger runs are set to begin with a short mountain route. \u003cbr/\u003eThis is the first time a diesel-electric hybrid train will be put into commercial service.\u003cbr/\u003eCompared to cars, trains are a relatively small contributor to global warming. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the recent popularity of hybrid cars, is helping to boost interest in hybrid trains.\u003cbr/\u003eRailway companies around the world, including America's Amtrak and Germany's Deutsche Bahn AG, are working on or investigating the technology.\u003cbr/\u003eYasuaki Kikuchi, a spokesman for the East Japan Railway, says the train uses a battery to cut down on the noise it makes.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the normal motor is utilised once the train has built up enough speed.\u003cbr/\u003eThe train has a diesel engine, two electric motors under each car and lithium ion batteries on the roof.\u003cbr/\u003eWith the word \"hybrid\" splashed in silver across its side, the otherwise normal-looking train rolls quietly out of a station, powered by its four electric motors.\u003cbr/\u003eNobuyuki Maruyama, the Operations Manager of Koumi Line, pointing to the underside of the train says the diesel engine's fuel tank can hold up to 500 litres (132 US gallons).\u003cbr/\u003eThe diesel engine only kicks in with a rumble when needed to climb a hill or if the batteries run low.\u003cbr/\u003eThe batteries are recharged when the train slows down. \u003cbr/\u003eAfter the power is switched off, the motors continue to turn for a while, and that energy, wasted in a non-hybrid train, is used to recharge the batteries.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, cost remains a major hurdle. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Kiha E200 train, which boosts fuel efficiency by 20 percent and reduces emissions by up to 60 percent, cost nearly $1.7 million, twice as much as a standard train.   \u003cbr/\u003eOne of the passengers says the train is quieter and smoother than regular trains.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Kiha E200, which seats 46 and can hold 117 people, is debuting on a 49-mile route that runs about once an hour through a mountain resort area.\u003cbr/\u003eEast Japan Railway will gather data on fuel consumption, which is expected to vary with different passenger loads, maintenance needs and winter
