Wide of Elizabeth Marston playing football\u003cbr/\u003eA mail-order genetic test kit can tell you if your child is born to be an athlete, its makers claim.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, doctors are sceptical about the reliability and ethics of genetically testing young children for future sporting potential.\u003cbr/\u003eA kick around with your daughter in the front garden.\u003cbr/\u003eBut how can you really tell if your child has true athletic prowess?\u003cbr/\u003eWell, the makers of a genetic test claim the answer is in its mail-order kits costing less than USD $200.\u003cbr/\u003eSome customers say test results are helping them steer their children to their most appropriate sports. \u003cbr/\u003eBut sceptical doctors and ethicists say the tests are putting profit before science and have a much greater price tag - potentially robbing perfectly capable youngsters of a chance to enjoy activities of their choice.\u003cbr/\u003eNine-year-old Elizabeth Marston is crazy about football and clearly has a talent for the sport.\u003cbr/\u003eLast year her father Bradley Marston, from Bountiful, Utah, bought a test from the internet and had Elizabeth tested.\u003cbr/\u003e\"She had that extra something special,\" says Marston, who wanted to know if she had a form of a gene called ACTN3, which influences production of a protein involved in certain muscle activity.\u003cbr/\u003eOne form of the gene has been linked with explosive bursts of strength needed for activities such as sprinting and weight-lifting.\u003cbr/\u003eThe ACTN3 test sold by Atlas Sports Genetics was developed by Genetic Technologies Limited, an Australian firm. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Atlas kit costs USD $169 and consists of two swabs to scrape cells from the inside of the cheek. \u003cbr/\u003eCustomers return the used swabs to the Boulder Coloroda company and get back an analysis several days later.\u003cbr/\u003eElizabeth Marston's test shows she has a sprint-related gene form - results her father hopes will help her get into elite sports programmes or win a scholarship to college.\u003cbr/\u003eMarston says he ordered the test partly out of curiosity, but approached it cautiously and talked with Elizabeth to make sure she could handle it.\u003cbr/\u003eElizabeth has loved football since she was just four-years-old and says she's happy with the results.\u003cbr/\u003eBut now at the age of 10, she knows it will take more than just genes to reach her goal of playing in the Olympics.\u003cbr/\u003eNat Carruthers, operations president for Atlas Sports Genetics, says the company has sold several hundred test kits since it began marketing them in 2008.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says critics have misrepresented the test.\u003cbr/\u003eCarruthers says: \"It's been misconstrued to say that this explains how good you're going to be or that you can be the next Olympic athlete, the next Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Michael Phelps. But it's not.  It kind of illuminates a bit of a darker path on understanding what your body is going to be capable of as you mature and go through life.\"\u003cbr/\u003eCyGene Laboratories, based in Coral Springs, Florida, sold a similar USD $100 swab test online for different sports-related genes until last autumn, but it has since suspended operations.\u003cbr/\u003eCyGene also sold kits online, advertised as being able to test for human diseases, but Mark Munzer, the company's former president, says that industry is reeling from a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) crackdown last year on efforts to sell disease-related gene tests in retail pharmacies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe FDA scheduled a hearing  to get feedback from an expert panel on how the agency should be regulating direct-to-consumer genetic tests that make specific medical claims. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the makers of sports gene tests that don't make medical claims are not regulated by the FDA.\u003cbr/\u003eUniversity of Maryland researcher Dr Stephen Roth is a specialist in exercise physiology and genetics and has studied the ACTN3 gene.\u003cbr/\u003eHe says the science of how genes influence athletic ability \"is in its infancy\" and that market claims are based on \"gross assumptions\".\u003cbr/\u003eDr Roth says roughly 80 per cent of people worldwide have the ACTN3 gene that has been linked with explosive force. \u003cbr/\u003eThe fact so few of these people become elite athletes underscores how it takes much more than genes to make a top sports star.\u003cbr/\u003eBut even people who don't produce the protein can become elite athletes, Roth says, citing the case of a Spanish long jumper who made it to the Olympics.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Parents should not pursue this test,\" he says. \"It is a single gene that they're testing for for athletic performance, which is arguably one of the more complex traits. It's going to be governed by many genes and many different factors.\"\u003cbr/\u003eEthically, doctors worry that most children are too young to make an educated, informed decision about whether to take the test and don't have the capacity to properly process any negative results.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The hazard is that parents will use it to change what their children are doing,\" says Roth.\u003cbr/\u003eBut Bradley Marston sees the test as just one tool to help him be a better informed parent who can gently encourage his child in areas where she is more likely to succeed.   \u003cbr/\u003e\"Does it mean whether they have the gene or not that their ability to succeed will happen? silky skills and ball control to dazzle in this five-a-side friendly match - but whether her explosive pace is down to a specific gene or hard work and training is still up for
