Various of soldiers and camp
Babylon is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, where Nebuchadnezzar II is believed to have built the Hanging Gardens.
Now a new exhibition at the British Museum shows the rich legacy left behind in mathematics, science, astrology, architecture, language and religion.
Recently AP cameras were granted rare access to one of Iraq's ancient archaeological treasures, which are falling into a state of disrepair.
It was one of the world's first and greatest cities: the place of a thousand languages, where astronomers mapped the stars millennia ago and Hammurabi wrote the first code of law.
King Nebuchadnezzar II is believed to have built the Hanging Gardens of Babylon here, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Today there is no trace of the Hanging Gardens, said to have been built for the homesick wife of King Nebuchadnezzar II.
Little actually remains of the ancient capital of Mesopotamia, often referred to the cradle of civilisation, located around 85 kilometres south of modern Baghdad.
The Associated Press was recently granted one of the few filming permits issued by Iraq's government since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
The site has the aura of a theme park touched by the ambition of dictator Saddam Hussein and the opportunism of looters.
Modern walkways run beside crumbling old walls, a reconstructed Greek theatre and a palace built for Saddam atop an artificial hill.
Now, for the first time, global institutions led by the U.N. Are thoroughly documenting the damage and how to fix it.
A UNESCO report due out early next year will cite Saddam's construction but focus, at the Iraqi government's request, on damage done by U.S. forces from April to September 2003, and the Polish troops deployed
there for more than a year afterward.
Dr. John Curtis, keeper of the Middle East collections at the British Museum and a contributor to the upcoming UNESCO report, was one of the first to discover and document the post-invasion damage to Babylon in December 2004.
Dr. Curtis is currently involved in a new exhibition on Babylon which opens at the British Museum in London on November 13, 2008.
He describes what he saw when he visited the ancient site in 2004.
"What I found were long trenches which had been dug through previously undisturbed archaeological deposits, earth removed from the surface of the site to fill sand bags and HESCO containers, large areas of the site flattened and covered with gravel and chemically treated, a fuel depot and parts of the ancient Ishtar gateway damaged by souvenir hunters."
The British Museum exhibit hopes to separate the myth of Babylon from reality.
Curator Dr Irving Finkel says that Babylonian ideas still influence modern culture today, for example horoscopes and measuring time.
Ancient surviving blue and aquamarine enamelled bricks of the famous Ishtar Gate on show in London, have not been previously seen in Britain.
The mosaics depict images of one of the most popular mythical creatures, Mushushshu, the dragon companion to Marduk, the God of Babylon.
On display are stone tablets of various shapes and sizes showing Cuneiform, the alphabet of syllables used by the ancient King Nebuchadnezzar to tell the stories of his reign.
Slabs with writings from the reign of Cyrus, the Persian ruler that invaded Babylon in the sixth century are also on show.
Deeper into the exhibit, focus shifts to the depiction of Babylon in art.
Babylon features in the Christian bible where it is often presented as place a immorality and alienation.
It also becomes a recurring theme in artworks about the meaning of human communication, identity and alienation from God.
William Blake's paintings and wood prints are among the creative interpretations of the tower of Babel, the whore of Babylon and the ancient kings and their courts.
The Babylon exhibit showcases a collection of 100 items on loan from the Louvre in Paris, Berlin's Pergamon (Staatliche) Museum as well as related items from the British Museum's own collection.
Although it had been hoped the National Museum of Iraq in Baghdad would contribute to the exhibit, the uncertain security status of the area at the time the exhibit was organised prevented the loan of priceless treasures.
Dr. Curtis says that he was surprised to see coalition troops using the ancient monuments as a base when in visited the site in 2004.
"I think it's quite shocking that the coalition authorities decided to establish a military camp at Babylon. the way for Iraqi archaeologists, perhaps with foreign help to repair some of the damage, to record the data and to prepare a management and conservation plan to protect Babylon in the future.
Archaeologists hope the effort will lead someday to new digging to follow up on the breakthrough excavations done by a German team in the early 1900s, when the building plans of the tower of Babel were first discovered.
The U.S. also says it will help rehabilitate Babylon, funding an effort by the World Monuments Fund and Iraq's State Board of Antiquities and
