Wide tilt up from men playing football to sunset\u003cbr/\u003eThe words Afghanistan and strike may conjure up images of aerial bombardments or roadside mines, but now as the country's first ten-pin bowling alley opens there is a more welcome association to be made.\u003cbr/\u003eThe new 1 (m) million dollar centre, called The Strikers, offers Afghans a welcome respite from the stultifying boredom that many say they endure daily, and may give a little hope to some in a country in which a U.S.-led war against the Taliban is in its eleventh year.\u003cbr/\u003e26-year-old Meena Rahmani says the alley is a product of her desire to create a place where Afghan men, women and families could gather, have fun and not be burdened by the social, religious and cultural restrictions that govern daily life in the impoverished, war-ravaged country.\u003cbr/\u003eRahmani, who left Afghanistan in 1992 and spent 15 years in India with her parents before moving to Canada for\u003cbr/\u003egraduate studies, said the idea came to her when she visited her home country several years ago and found there\u003cbr/\u003ewas nothing for Afghans to do beyond occasionally going out to eat, going for walks or visiting family.\u003cbr/\u003eBeyond being an enjoyable way to spend a couple of hours, bowling \"can be a great element in bringing peace in Afghanistan,\" said Rahmani.\u003cbr/\u003eThe alley, which opened for business about a month ago, was built from the ground up. The equipment was imported from the United States and the engineers who set it up and trained the local staff came from China.\u003cbr/\u003eBowling may not be the answer to Afghanistan's ills, but The Strikers, Rahmani hopes, marks another step toward boosting the quality of life for Afghans and helping them push through the social and religious barriers cemented over the past decades.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Lots of Afghan youth, they are getting interest into this sport and I am sure that in the future, in the very close future, we will be having our own Afghans they will be like taking part in the world wide competitions of bowling,\" she said.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sizeable investment came from Rahmani family money gained after the sale of land in Afghanistan.\u003cbr/\u003eKabul's unreliable electricity network meant she had install industrial size generators to ensure a steady stream of electricity. \u003cbr/\u003eThe operating expenses for the first month, alone, came in at 30,000 U.S Dollars most of it for utilities.\u003cbr/\u003eThose expenses mean that it's a pastime for a select few in the capital. \u003cbr/\u003eAn hour of bowling costs 35 dollars, which can be divided between as many as six players to a lane. A cup of coffee costs 5 dollars, more than the average local daily wage.\u003cbr/\u003e26-years-old Sayed Zameer, an Afghan businessman who is running his own Import/Export Company, is a regular visitor to the bowling alley.\u003cbr/\u003eHe used to travel to Dubai and other neighbouring countries to enjoy his free time. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the first bowling alley in Kabul opens a new window of hope form him and other young Afghans of his level.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Mostly the young generation is, like, it's easier to go out of the country or they want to see other places, but if we see such kind of encouragement it shows that we have a future here and this is a good opportunity,\" said Zameer.\u003cbr/\u003eBut the daily reality of life in the war-ravaged nation is clearly reflected outside the alley's main door. \u003cbr/\u003eThe years of fighting meant infrastructure was either not developed, or deteriorated, unemployment stands at about 35 percent.\u003cbr/\u003eDarulaman Palace remains one of the most used playgrounds for many other young Afghans who are hit by the high rate of unemployment.\u003cbr/\u003e25-years-old Abdullah, a school graduate, is an unemployed Afghan who does not have the expendable income he needs to get access to places such as The Strikers.\u003cbr/\u003eHe is one of the dozens young Afghan men who are playing football by shell of the palace.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Abdullah and many of his friends, playing on the mud grounds is the only way of having fun.\u003cbr/\u003e\u003c/span\u003e\n\u003c/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv
