Excavator operating at construction site\u003cbr/\u003eWhile world economies reel from the global financial crisis, Russia among them, there has been little apparent setback in plans to develop the Russian Black Sea coast resort of Sochi ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics.\u003cbr/\u003eThe city was chosen to host the olympic event two years ago.\u003cbr/\u003eOrganisers insist that the projects are running to time, and that the government will continue to furnish the sizeable budgets to ensure there are no hitches.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, the members of the political opposition say that the huge budgets for Olympics construction could be used more wisely.\u003cbr/\u003e\"We are talking about 15 to 20 (b) billion US dollars,\" said Russian tycoon Alexander Lebedev, a former candidate for Sochi Mayor elections, was reportedly struck from the ballot for technicalities. \u003cbr/\u003e\"I think now what we should do is actually optimise the budget, make it transparent, put control over the bureaucracy, public control (over the bureaucracy), parliamentary control (over the bureaucracy) and try to actually save on some of the costs, like not probably building some of the hugest stadiums in a subtropical climate,\" he said.\u003cbr/\u003eRussian investors rushed to the city after Sochi was chosen as the 2014 host.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government also enlisted the support of a number of (b) billionaire businessmen to lead construction of key facilities.\u003cbr/\u003eInterros, which is owned by metals magnate and keen skier Vladimir Potanin, is building the Rosa Khutor downhill ski area.  \u003cbr/\u003eOleg Deripaska's business Basic Element is building the Olympic Village, media centre and a new airport, while state-controlled Gazprom is behind the cross-country ski areas.\u003cbr/\u003eSochi is also building a new highway and a cargo port to accommodate the shipments of materials for Olympic construction. \u003cbr/\u003eAndrey Streltsov, Deputy director of InzhTransstroy company said that once the construction was completed, the cargo port was to be turned into marina for the benefit of local people. \u003cbr/\u003eAnother issue is the Imereti valley - where there are concerns about both the fate of its residents in the small village of Vesyoloye and the environment.\u003cbr/\u003eResidents there say they do not want to leave their homes to make way for a slew of Olympic developments, including a park that will cut across a swathe of residences. \u003cbr/\u003eAuthorities have ordered the villagers to leave by the end of 2009.\u003cbr/\u003eThe area, located 25 miles away from the city centre, will be the heartbeat of the Olympics, with two ice arenas, curling and skating rinks, along with an Olympic Village with luxurious hotels and a top-end residential zone.\u003cbr/\u003eBoris Nemtsov, an opposition candidate for the Sochi mayoral elections which are due to take place on Sunday, believes the authorities have made a huge mistake by choosing the valley as a place for construction. \u003cbr/\u003e\"They will spoil the pearl of Sochi - the Imereti lowland, where we have the best beaches, large deposits of healing mud, and which is actually the habitat of rare birds. shrubbery, villagers' crops and derelict buildings. \u003cbr/\u003eVyacheslav Zhukov, a 47-year-old resident of Vesyoloye, says he is not willing to leave the land that his grandmother first settled in, in the 1930s, when the land was still a swamp. \u003cbr/\u003eZhukov said his family drained the swamp and made it fertile and he still grows vegetables in his garden for sale at the local market. \u003cbr/\u003eHe said authorities offered to sell his piece of land and buy a house in a village which is being built especially for the Imereti citizens forced to leave.\u003cbr/\u003eHowever, he
