Wide shot of market vendors.\u003cbr/\u003eFarmers in Uganda are discovering the value of communicating by mobile phone. \u003cbr/\u003eThe technology on-the-go means they can be constantly in touch with current market prices. \u003cbr/\u003eMobile phone technology was introduced to Uganda ten years ago. \u003cbr/\u003eBut it's only recently that towns like Mbarara are beginning to realise the benefit of modern communication.\u003cbr/\u003eMbarara is located in the western region of Uganda, and the majority of residents are very experienced farmers. \u003cbr/\u003eThroughout the region fields of crops envelop the area with produce sent to the city for sale.\u003cbr/\u003eIn previous years the farmers would send messengers to the city to find out how much the produce was trading for. Now all that's changing.\u003cbr/\u003eToday, Beatrice Yiga, a farmer who specialises in growing Irish potatoes, makes a call lasting less than a minute to decide the market crops for the day.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Mobile phones have tremendously helped farmers to access markets because they get instant information, they cut on costs and they can sample the market before they actually move\" explains Yiga.\u003cbr/\u003eWith an estimated population of 30 million, almost 80% of Uganda's population is made up of farmers.\u003cbr/\u003eMuch has been written about the mobile phone revolution sweeping Africa and its potential to spur development. Nevertheless, the rural regions of Uganda still have no fixed telephone lines to date and the growing interest in mobile phones has been hailed as a way to leap forward in technology.\u003cbr/\u003eEric Senogga, a chicken farmer, recalls the amount of money he had to spend before he purchased a mobile phone. Senogga, also familiar with the manual task of sending messengers to and fro, now transacts business leisurely from the comfort of his home.\u003cbr/\u003eMobile phone service providers are now offering the latest market prices for crops on hand sets. The messaging service means the farmers don't have to make phone calls.\u003cbr/\u003eEven with the \"new\" technology in Mbarare, the adjustments to handle mobile phones has yet to be perfected. \u003cbr/\u003eThe impoverished farmers of this area manage to get hold of mobile phones, yet they have no electricity to keep the phone battery charged.\u003cbr/\u003eFear of electricity in the region - and the prospect of large bills - means most of the residents of Mbarare are unwilling to request power supplies.\u003cbr/\u003eFor Robert Mayanja, this is simply a business opportunity he can cash in on. With electricity access, Mayanja offers mobile charging services at a fee to farmers who wish to stay connected.\u003cbr/\u003eFarmers and market vendors in Uganda have always been victims to middle men who buy and transport crops from the farms at very low prices, thereafter selling the crops to market vendors within the city at high prices making large profits.\u003cbr/\u003eBut with every market vendor now communicating directly with the farmers these unscrupulous middlemen are becoming extinct.\u003cbr/\u003e\"My phone has helped me a lot, I call the farmers and ask for the produce directly. city.\u003cbr/\u003eThe introduction of mobile phones to Uganda has brought great change to these rural residents - change which can only bring further progress in the
