It is another typical reaction from him,\" said Lecompte in an interview with AP Television in Paris.\u003cbr/\u003e\"He puts obstacles and he stops the negotiations in the brutal manner that we've seen,\" added Lecompte.\u003cbr/\u003eThe decision came after the Venezuelan leader, who began mediating an exchange in August with President Alvaro Uribe's permission, spoke to Colombia's top general in defiance of an order not to talk directly to military leaders on the issue, a presidential spokesman said. \u003cbr/\u003eThe spokesman said that Chavez spoke by telephone with General Mario Montoya earlier on Wednesday about the state of hostages held by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC.\u003cbr/\u003eThe spokesman added that the leftist Colombian senator serving as a go-between in the talks, Piedad Cordoba, phoned Montoya and passed the telephone to Chavez. \u003cbr/\u003eCordoba's mediation role was also being cancelled, he added.\u003cbr/\u003eIn Paris, Lecompte said that \"President Chavez is the only person who can find a solution to the problem of the hostages in Colombia.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"President Uribe will always create problems. So I ask the international community to make him reconsider and realise that the Colombian hostages must be released,\" Lecompte added.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is not known why Uribe demanded Chavez not speak to Colombian military officials.\u003cbr/\u003eThe FARC, Latin America's most potent rebel army, holds some 45 high-value hostages, including three US military contractors and Ingrid Betancourt, a former presidential candidate who is a dual Colombian-French national.\u003cbr/\u003eFor their release, the FARC is demanding the government release all imprisoned rebels, who number in the hundreds.\u003cbr/\u003eFamilies of the kidnapped had supported Chavez's intervention, saying any deal to be made was \"now or never.\"\u003cbr/\u003e\"There are some soldiers who have been held hostage for ten years. It will be six years for Ingrid. That's enough. We must find a solution to this problem,\" said Lecompte.\u003cbr/\u003eThe decision to end Chavez's mediation is likely to prove a severe setback for any talks between the rebels and Colombia's president, who share a strong mutual dislike.\u003cbr/\u003eFARC has also so far failed to produce proof-of-life for any of the high-value hostages, as sought by the Colombian and US
