Wide of helicopter flying off with load of sand\u003cbr/\u003eResidents of Fargo, North Dakota came together at churches on Sunday and prayed they would be spared the Red River's wrath as water burst a levee and swamped a school.\u003cbr/\u003eChurch services that are a staple of life on Sunday mornings in Fargo took on greater significance as people gathered after a week of sandbagging and helping neighbours and prayed that their levees would keep holding the water back. \u003cbr/\u003eVern Baardson, Pastor of Triumph Lutheran Brethren Church, talked about the ongoing crisis at the service.\u003cbr/\u003eThe church held its services at a hotel to accommodate all the people from other churches that cancelled worship because of the flood. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Red River continued its slow retreat on Sunday after cresting a day earlier, dropping to to 39.92 feet (12.17 metres) - still\u003cbr/\u003enearly 22 feet (6.7 metres) above flood stage. \u003cbr/\u003eThe river may still fluctuate up to a foot and remain at dangerous levels for a week, testing the long line of sandbag levees that residents hastily constructed all week.\u003cbr/\u003eFargo faces another test this week as a storm approached with up to a half-foot of snow and powerful wind gusts that could send ferocious waves crashing into and over the already-stressed levees.\u003cbr/\u003eThe sandbag effort resumed on Sunday as helicopters began dropping one-ton sandbags into the river to deflect its violent current and keep it from eroding vulnerable areas of the dike system.\u003cbr/\u003eThe aerial effort also included unmanned Predator drones used to watch flood patterns and ice floes and provide high-definition information to teams on the ground. \u003cbr/\u003eNorth Dakota has more than 2,400 National Guard troops engaged in the flood fight across the state.\u003cbr/\u003eThe helicopter sandbag effort was focused on an area of the river that put another scare in the city during the night when it burst past a levee and submerged a Lutheran school campus.\u003cbr/\u003e\"The idea is that this will provide some more protection because we've got to maintain the flood protection here over a week at these high levels and then obviously it will start to go down,\" said North Dakota Governor John Hoeven.\u003cbr/\u003eIn addition to church, many residents are turning to local radio stations for community information. \u003cbr/\u003eKFGO Radio Host Joel Heitkamp says his station fills a critical role in the flooding.\u003cbr/\u003e\"If we don't have the information, it gets out to them in a different way.
