Various shots of women in beauty salon\u003cbr/\u003eWomen in the Afghan capital Kabul are taking advantage of their post-Taliban freedom to enjoy what women all over the world have been enjoying for decades: a chance to improve their appearance.\u003cbr/\u003eNow clinics specialising in plastic surgery are not only treating the victims of war and disease, they're also carrying out cosmetic surgery.\u003cbr/\u003eAfghanistan has been slowly adjusting to a post-Taliban world.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Taliban, defined by their strict interpretation of Sharia, or Islamic law, was particularly harsh on women.\u003cbr/\u003eThey were prevented from attending school, were not allowed to leave their homes without a male relative escort and were required to wear burkas to cover their face and body.\u003cbr/\u003eIf a woman was caught wearing nail polish, her fingertips could have been immediately chopped off. \u003cbr/\u003eIn the past, beauty shops were seen as examples of vanity, and plastic surgery would have been vehemently opposed.\u003cbr/\u003eA large number of beauty shops are now seen across the capital, Kabul. But the opening of a cosmetic surgery clinic was a welcome surprise to many Afghan women.\u003cbr/\u003eUntil now, women would have had to travel to another country for treatment, or simply gone without.\u003cbr/\u003eSOUNDBITE (Dari) \u003cbr/\u003e\"I am very happy now, because this kind of facility (plastic surgery) was available in Iran and other countries but not here.
