Low angle shot of shoppers at fruit and vegetable market\u003cbr/\u003eIt's the ultimate belt-tightening handbook: bean soup with no beans, appetisers to trick your stomach and effective ways to collect crumbs off the table. \u003cbr/\u003eA new book \"Starvation Recipes: Life in Athens during the occupation\" documents the terrible hardships faced by Greeks under Nazi occupation in World War II, but within its pages may well lie some useful tips for austerity-hit citizens today.\u003cbr/\u003eAthens residents suffered mass famine in World War II, and the book compiles thousands of newspaper clippings from that time, which gave advice on how to stay alive on next to nothing.   \u003cbr/\u003eFew Athenians are old enough to remember how dead bodies were collected from the streets each morning, after people died in the night from starvation.\u003cbr/\u003eHills were stripped bare of wild greens and families had to keep round-the-clock guard of their backyard chicken coops. \u003cbr/\u003eStarving city residents invented new ways to stay alive, helped by daily advice columns in Athens' heavily censored newspapers, known simply as \"survival guides.\"\u003cbr/\u003eHistorian and high school teacher Eleni Nikolaidou spent 18 months compiling recipes and details of life in those desperate times.\u003cbr/\u003eShe combed through more than 6,000 scanned newspaper clippings from the 1941-44 Nazi rule to produce the book, which became a surprise hit. \u003cbr/\u003e\"Starvation Recipes\" was released earlier this year and is already on its second print run, resonating with a country stuck in recession and facing an alarming decline in living standards. \u003cbr/\u003eNikolaidou stumbled on the subject two years ago while working on a master's degree on Greece's wartime economy. \u003cbr/\u003eSome of the tips she found make chilling reading.\u003cbr/\u003eOne recommended included collecting crumbs every day so that by the end of the week you could have a cupful. \u003cbr/\u003ePeople were advised to cheat their stomachs by chewing their food very, very slowly, so it felt as though they were eating more. \u003cbr/\u003e\"The survival guides managed to save the Athenians during that time, so I can imagine that, yes, they also will be able to help now, especially the very poor and working class who have a problem managing their finances and their diet in general,\" Nikolaidou said.\u003cbr/\u003eRaisins, olives, wild greens, and rationed bread became the nation's staples against the mass starvation that claimed an estimated 300,000 lives. \u003cbr/\u003eGreeks are once again having to adjust to frugal living, after decades of overspending have brought them to the brink of bankruptcy.\u003cbr/\u003eThe austerity measures introduced as conditions for rescue loans from the IMF and European Union have forced 9 out of 10 Greeks to change their food-shopping habits, according to a September survey by the consumer organisation KEPKA.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople are now eating out less, cutting back on meat and treats, and swapping quality food brands for cheaper substitutes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe growing demand for affordable meals has been met by magazines and a new batch of low-budget cookbooks.   \u003cbr/\u003e\"All the stores are full of food but people cannot afford (it). So they need to spend their money more wisely,\" says 31 year-old chef F.T. Bletsas, the youthful host of the Greek TV show \"Mama's Cooking.\"\u003cbr/\u003eBut opting for cheap processed foods is the biggest mistake money conscious consumers can make, he says.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Everybody is trying to spend less. But the idea is how to spend less and also to eat better, nutritionally and enjoying your food,\" said the author of a 2010 book on frugal dining.\u003cbr/\u003eBletsas' top picks for shoppers include: olive oil, tinned sardines, lentils, and good quality meat - to be used sparingly.\u003cbr/\u003eHis guidelines are simple: Cook your own food, shop smart, and where you can harvest food from nature.\u003cbr/\u003eShopping at Athens' main fruit and vegetable market, resident Giorgos Asfihtiotou said shopping habits have definitely changed.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Things are tight.
