Moss-covered trees that are 80 to 100 years-old soar into the sky.
It's also the site of a rare Pacific Yew tree, revered for its medicinal properties.
"It contains the medication taxol, which is used of course for ovarian and breast cancer. Native people have used it for a couple of thousand years to cure a sick person. Very much like what they did. They went to the tree they thanked the tree for giving part of it's dress to make the sick person feel better. They used the inner bark, submerged it in water, moisture, and gave it to the sick person, chewing, almost like chewing gum, all day long."
"It contains the medication taxol, which is used of course for ovarian and breast cancer," says Scholermann. "Native people have used it for a couple of thousand years to cure a sick person. They used the inner bark, submerged it in water, moisture, and gave it to the sick person, chewing, almost like chewing gum, all day long," says Scholermann.
The tree's bark is used to produce the natural-source cancer drug, which is also used in treating lung cancer and Kaposi's sarcoma.
The group comes across what's known as an enormous nurse log. When the tree fell, possibly because of a lighting strike or in a storm, it began to decompose due to fungus, microbes and insects. This created ideal conditions for new trees to grow on top of the nurse log.
Lichen, moss, ferns, flowing plants and young trees are growing on the log.
Lynn Canyon Park is a popular destination for both tourists and locals who come to hike and swim in many of its swimming holes.
Visitors to the park can access the Baden Powell Trail, one of the best known trails in North Vancouver. The trail allows hikers to reach a number of parks, including nearby Grouse Mountain and Quarry Rock in Deep Cove.
The visitors venture across the Lynn Valley Suspension Bridge that hangs 50 metres (164 feet) above the flowing Capilano River. The bridge offers a vantage point to view waterfalls and deep pools below.
It's not uncommon to see bears in the wilderness in North Vancouver. In an effort to try preventing human-bear conflicts, the park uses garbage bins that are designed to prevent the animals from opening them.
Scholermann stands next to a giant tree stump showing the visitors another smaller tree that has grown from the stump itself.
"This forest is totally unique," says park visitor Michael Lawrence.
"We're still learning amazing things. Old growth forests especially. What we can do to preserve it and still enjoy it without abusing it. So much that we still haven't learned."
Visitors can also explore the Capilano River Hatchery. The hatchery was built in 1971 in order to help prevent the demise of salmon stocks due to the construction of a nearby dam.
The visitors watch the salmon through an iron gate in the flowing river. They also view migrating adult salmon through plexiglass windows.
A festive meal in the park caps off a spectacular day discovering the outdoors.
"I knew it before that it's very important to save nature, but it's different if you see it by your own eyes, with your own eyes, and you get taught a little about this, how it works, and you can just feel it, how important it is, that it be saved for the next years, 100 years or 1000 years," says tourist Carrie Moissl.
AP Television
Lynn Canyon Park, North Vancouver, BC - 10 August 2014
1.
