in identifying bodies and some slowness of transferring aid, his administration is getting high marks for both organisation and sensitivity.\u003cbr/\u003eEarlier in the year, the Thaksin government was often criticised for its policy toward Muslims in its southern peninsular region.\u003cbr/\u003eA massacre of armed militants in April and the suffocation of almost 90 Muslims after rioting in October led to international criticism of both local and national authorities.\u003cbr/\u003eBut in overwhelmingly Buddhist Thailand, Thaksin's strong military measures have been greeted with some enthusiasm.\u003cbr/\u003eThe bird flu, which cost both in terms of human lives and lost livelihoods, also created problems for the government.\u003cbr/\u003eBut programmes to give grants to rural communities and low interest loans to individuals have caused the poor to embrace what is often referred to in Thailand as \"Thaksinomics\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe prime minister has suggested that he could wipe out poverty before he leaves office.\u003cbr/\u003eThese claims have some critics scoffing at their attainability.\u003cbr/\u003eOthers point to external forces which Thaksin doesn't always take advice on handling and his own headstrong initiatives, such as the attempt to buy the Liverpool football club, which leave him open to corruption claims.\u003cbr/\u003eHe's a man that most Thais
