Wide of ocean between islands\u003cbr/\u003eMost people are already well aware of its famous Komodo dragons, the world's only living giant lizards. \u003cbr/\u003eBut the waters of Komodo park hold a hidden treasure.\u003cbr/\u003eThey are are home to 1,000 species of fish, 260 reef-building corals, 70 sponges as well as a variety of whales, dolphins and sea turtles. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Komodo park in eastern Indonesia is not an ordinary national park.\u003cbr/\u003eThere is another reason apart from it's famous dragons why tourists come here.\u003cbr/\u003eTwo main islands within the park, Komodo and Rinca islands, form a bottleneck passage between the Pacific Ocean to the North and the Indian Ocean to the south.\u003cbr/\u003eIn the heart of the Lesser Sunda seascape, the ocean here has some of the swiftest currents on the planet.\u003cbr/\u003eIt's widely considered one of the world's best diving sites. \u003cbr/\u003eMarcus Matthews-Sawyer holds a senior advisor position at the Putri Naga Komodo, a private company which holds tourism concession rights to the Komodo national park. \u003cbr/\u003eHe says the park is a unique natural place not only because of its giant lizards, but also because it is located right in the middle of the Coral Triangle region. \"Komodo is right in the middle, right smack in the centre of the Coral Triangle, and the Coral Triangle is one of the world's most bio-diverse marine environments. So even without the Komodo dragon, Komodo National Park would be a pretty special natural place,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe Coral Triangle spans across six countries, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Timor Leste. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is considered as the global centre of marine biodiversity. \u003cbr/\u003eTherefore the Indonesian government and the park authority intend to protect the waters of the park by all means necessary. \u003cbr/\u003eSome park officials have admitted that illegal fishing is the single biggest threat to the survival of the park ecosystem.\u003cbr/\u003eThere are designated zones within the park where people are allowed to fish with environmentally-safe methods.\u003cbr/\u003eA lot of the illegal fishermen come from outside of the park boundaries, and its patrol teams often meet strong resistance from them. \u003cbr/\u003eFortunately, since the park began regular sea patrols in 1996, the incidents of illegal fishing have dropped significantly.\u003cbr/\u003ePark ranger Muhammad Saleh says the park must step up its patrol in the waters of Komodo to deter would-be illegal fishermen. \"We have two patrol boats and speed boats, and we routinely patrol in these waters. We are serious about it because in the Komodo national park, we showcase not only the Komodo dragons, but also the underwater life,\" he says. \u003cbr/\u003eThe park authority has also continued to raise awareness of marine conservation among people living in the park. \u003cbr/\u003eIt is working on community development projects and giving special incentives to those residents who are willing to give up some natural resources in the sea and adhere to the park's conservation policies.\u003cbr/\u003eThe residents of Papagaran island, located inside the park boundaries, have welcomed these initiatives.\u003cbr/\u003eSince last year, more than a hundred fishermen here took part in a voluntary training programme to cultivate seaweed as an alternative income. \u003cbr/\u003eSeaweed is cultivated in deep waters surrounding the island.\u003cbr/\u003ePeople use ropes and bottles to mark out the floating farms for passing boats. \u003cbr/\u003eSeaweed is harvested within a few months - it's one of the reasons why its cultivation can be promising for local fishermen.\u003cbr/\u003e32-year-old Harto is one of the local fishermen who has tried farming seaweed successfully. \u003cbr/\u003eHarto says that seaweed farming is worth trying as a business enterprise.  \"In the future, we hope this can become an alternative income for us. But at the moment, a lot of villagers are having difficulties because of price fluctuations and their capability to set up seaweed farms. Otherwise, a lot of people here would like to do this,\" he says.\u003cbr/\u003eHarto sells raw seaweed to a local market, which processes it into food items for export. \u003cbr/\u003eBut, like many in his village, Harto has not been able to grow seaweed all year long because of high costs.\u003cbr/\u003eMost fishermen here live a simple life and often lack the necessary capital to start up a sustainable business venture such as seaweed farming. \u003cbr/\u003ePutri Naga Komodo has recently begun offering micro credit to help people within the park with their economic plans, which are in line with conservation principles. \u003cbr/\u003eSince the micro-credit introduction in 2007, people in the fishing villages inside the Komodo park have expressed a big interest in the scheme. \u003cbr/\u003eIn April the Indonesian government officially launched a new, protected marine park in the Coral Triangle that is considered to be especially resilient to rising sea temperatures as a result of climate change.\u003cbr/\u003eThe government claims that the park can support sustainable fisheries and ensure food security for up to 2 million people in the region. \u003cbr/\u003eThe
