Though these things presumably formed in very hot regions close to stars, and the question is where. There are two major possibilities. One; that they formed in the inner most, hotter most region of our solar system when the sun and planets were forming and they were thrown all the away out to the Pluto region of the solar system. The other possibility is that they were formed around other stars, in hot regions around other stars. These are fascinating possibilities. But the fabulous thing is these are samples we have in the lab. We can study these at atomic level resolution.\"\u003cbr/\u003e5. Various STILLS of microscopic specks of comet dust that were collected\u003cbr/\u003eNASA scientists on Monday said they have discovered fire and ice in samples brought back as part of the 212 (m) million US dollar Stardust mission, which collected comet dust that is providing clues to the birth of the solar system.\u003cbr/\u003e\"Remarkably enough, we have found fire and ice. We have found samples in the coldest part of the solar system,\" said Don Brownlee, a University of Washington astronomer who is the mission's principal scientist.\u003cbr/\u003eIt is unclear whether the samples formed within the solar system or a distant star before being cast into the solar system, Brownlee said.\u003cbr/\u003eHundreds of microscopic specks of comet dust were collected and returned to Earth after the robotic Stardust spacecraft flew past the comet Wild 2 in 2004. \u003cbr/\u003eA 100-pound (45-kilogramme) capsule returned the samples to Earth in January after a seven year mission.\u003cbr/\u003eThe specks of dust are described as glassy materials, crystals like olivine and various trace elements such as magnesium, peridot and sulfides.\u003cbr/\u003eThe spacecraft containing the Stardust canister looped around the sun three times to capture the interstellar and comet dust, which hit the gel at a speed six times faster than a bullet fired from a rifle.\u003cbr/\u003eThe mothership, which has travelled nearly 3 (b) billion miles (4.8 billion kilometres), remains in permanent orbit around the sun.\u003cbr/\u003eThe next time it flies by Earth will be on 14 January 2009.\u003cbr/\u003eThe grains are pristine samples of material which scientists say is providing clues to the formation of the sun and nine planets.\u003cbr/\u003eAbout 150 scientists have been studying the dust since it arrived.\u003cbr/\u003eBrownlee said that if it is forming in our solar system, it must have been formed in the hottest regions and transported to the coldest regions.\u003cbr/\u003eThe samples were the first extraterrestrial material returned to Earth since a manned mission returned moon samples more than three decades ago.\u003cbr/\u003eWhen the comet dust particles were captured, they left tracks - some shaped like carrots, others like turnips - in a specialised silicone-based material which was contained in a tennis racket-sized collector mitt, which contained a honeycomb of cells filled with gel-like material.\u003cbr/\u003eScientists spent hours using a computer-controlled needle to remove each
