I think there is an understanding that sustainable nature is one that enables a wide variety of species to live side by side, and not necessarily one species.  I think that the consideration that were in the past when we wanted to take a quick fix, to get it green and do it very quickly, are gone.\"\u003cbr/\u003e14. Aerials of burnt forest\u003cbr/\u003eWith Israel's worst ever wildfire finally over, the long road to recovery has begun for one of the country's few natural forests.\u003cbr/\u003eDonations are already pouring in from around the world and government agencies are vowing to replant Carmel Forest. \u003cbr/\u003eBut some experts think letting nature take its course would be better.\u003cbr/\u003eSmoking remains - all that's left of these trees following the devastating fire that ripped through Carmel forest.\u003cbr/\u003e42 people were killed in the blaze, and more than 17,000 people were evacuated from their homes. \u003cbr/\u003eThe 4-day-long fire on the outskirts of Israel's third-largest city of Haifa is seen as a calamity in a country where only 7 percent of the land is wooded. \u003cbr/\u003eThe inferno burned down 5 million trees, and about a third of the nature reserve. \u003cbr/\u003eWhere 30-meter-high oak, pine and Cyprus trees once stood, blackened, barren hilltops remain and charred twigs stick out of the ground like gravestones.\u003cbr/\u003eFor over a century, the Jewish National Fund has preached the planting of trees as the ultimate act of Zionism. \u003cbr/\u003eBest known for its signature blue-and-white collection boxes and fundraising campaigns abroad, the JNF has planted 240 million trees across Israel.\u003cbr/\u003eThe Carmel forest makes up 5 percent of that forested land.\u003cbr/\u003eJNF chief, Russell Robinson, has vowed to replant the trees and his organisation has quickly raised upward of $1 million out of the $10 million it hopes to generate in the coming year to fund a wide range of restoration and fire prevention measures. \u003cbr/\u003eIsrael's national carrier El Al said it would donate $5 to tree planting for every plane ticket purchased from the U.S. in 2011 and the American Jewish Council has put up an additional $100,000.\u003cbr/\u003eEffie Stenzler, CEO of KKL Israel, says \" This year we are sure that we will  plant 1.5 million trees, which will be the most biggest number of trees that have been plant in one week\".\u003cbr/\u003eRobinson adds \"As you see,  millions of trees that have burnt you still see the beauty and the essence of the beauty that is here,  you feel the spirit of the people and you know what the commitment is: that this land will turn back from black to green\".\u003cbr/\u003eThe fire caused almost twice the combined damage of all previous Carmel fires over the past 30 years.\u003cbr/\u003eThe debate here boils down to the very essence of trees in the Holy Land. \u003cbr/\u003eThe majority of trees in Israel are man-planted, planned lines of pine trees that make up the typical Israeli forested landscape for picnics and hiking.\u003cbr/\u003eOver 90 percent of the area affected by the fire is of the natural variety.\u003cbr/\u003eA replanting of trees might not restore what was lost, and there are concerns the introduction of more pine trees could overwhelm the recovery of other plants and species.\u003cbr/\u003eMiki Livnat , an environment consultant, says :\u003cbr/\u003e\"The pine tree is great, it's a great companion,  a member of the community of trees  here on the carmel,  but he is dominant,  he became dominant because of us, because we planted it all over . Particularly with pine trees, where seeds are trapped in cones and explode when exposed to heat, the potential for renewal is great.\u003cbr/\u003eIsrael's minister of environmental protection will oversee the recovery efforts, heading a task force made up of experts from the various ministries, agencies and nature groups\u003cbr/\u003eNOTE: Last Friday, Turkey sent aircraft and firefighters to help extinguish the forest fire in Israel.
